-=SD=-
I would say Nintendo (NES), mainly for all the games it had plus the franchise games like mario and zelda that are still going strong today.

-=SD=-
Oh and add Metroid to that franchise list, though I thought Super Metroid was better on the SNES, the first on NES was hard as heck to finish ;)

NeoMasamune
I voted NES. The Atari 2600 got me started, but the NES made me a total game addict. After that, there was no turning back!
Icarus ^i^
NES... just look at the ammount of games and how widespread it became. Plus the fact that it seemed to live forever... consoles nowadays hardly debut before ppl start talking about the next generation. NES was around and active for ages :)
Astral
Definately NES. I can remember playing Mario for years, even after newer models/games were released. To be honest I picked up Mario for the first time in probably 7 years. After two or three random pit deaths, I was back in the zone and whipped through the game in under an hour (that any good?). Oh how I love muscle memory. :) You could have added the Jaguar system, but that was, and still is, a big fat useless joke. ;)
velocity3k
Sega Master System and then Later Mega Drive/Genesis.
tomwarren Veteran Posted October 27, 2003 Veteran Share Posted October 27, 2003 I agree NES, then PS2 for bringing the next generation and Xbox for online gaming :)
+Dick Montage Subscriber² Posted October 27, 2003 Subscriber² Share Posted October 27, 2003 Many systems did: 1) The Atari for being the first MASSIVE console to be well marketed and make video gaming popular within the home. 2) The NES for becoming a cultural icon. 3) The original Playstation for bringing vieo gaming to a new level, making it popular for a different demographic, and a "must-have" item for many households including non gaming households. My 2 cents
linked
NES revolutionized the way we think of games. But also, SNES was what really showed us that they didn't have to be crappy, pixelized things, and that complexity was possible. It brought us some of the first RPG's (final fantasy), fighting games (mortal kombat), and mastered the platform action/adventure (Super Mario, Donkey Kong, etc). NES started it, SNES kicked it into full gear.
Chi(mera)
Sure you could argue Atari or some crap like that....but everyone knows that it was NINTENDO. No competition there, it went mainstream and then everyone saw a huge pickup in sales and console interests. bleh IMO

xp1ode
Im going to say Nintendo because i never owned anything before that, and after that, as creamhackered said PS2 for the dvd play and Xbox for the online gaming. But nevertheless Nintendo is still the best in my book....
username
SNES: first to have "3D" games with mode 7 and super FX games... the first to use some polygons and not sprites
Boffa Jones Veteran Posted October 27, 2003 Veteran Share Posted October 27, 2003 Nintendo brought console gaming into the spotlight, I beleive. And then ps1/2. The Playstation brand has done now to a greater extent what the original nintendo did back then. PS2 and games such as madden tony hawk and GTA are now bringing milions of new gamers into the fold. ~Bull}{Dog~
The PSX was the most revolutionary by far in terms of the amounts of people and money it brought to the industry, but my all time favorite is still the Mega Drive/Genesis. Gameboy was VERY important too.
