devBrian
What are you people thinking? It was OBVIOUSLY the Atari 2600. Before it, you NEVER saw people with gaming consoles... NES was just making gaming look better -- of course it brought more people to the market, but the ratio of people gained is higher with Atari 2600... Krest
What defines a console and computer? In theory it's the same, you can have a game console run an OS and use it as any computer. In reality with consoles you can just play games. To put it better,a console IS a computer,a computer is not a console :)
eppisode3
The question was revolutionize, and Nintendo and the NES definately did that. Hell, the controller basics from the NES are still used (D-Pad, A B buttons). I can't speak for others, but for me, when the NES came out I HAD to have one. All of my friends HAD to have one and I don't remember that with the Atari.
Chicane-UK Veteran Posted October 27, 2003 Veteran Share Posted October 27, 2003 I think for me personally it was the Playstation. I just remeber seeing a friend playing one the day they came out.. think it was Ridge Racer. I couldn't get over how good it looked - arcade machine in the home!! :D
kryptonik
Nintedo. No doubt.
mcnelson
I still have my NES. Duck Hunt rules. Anyway, I've opted for Playstation, purely because it brought into the home the kind of games you'd been playing in arcades...when I first played Ridge Racer I was in awe, I thought it was the best thing since whatever the previous best thing had been. :)
Ciderx
The Sega MegaDrive/Genesis. The reason why is that it was the first console to jump over the toy/entertainment system barrier, as much through its advertising as the games. Consoles prior to it were aimed at younger audiences, and this was the first that aimed for the 13-25 age bracket.
LUTZIFER
lol, I voted for XBOX. But after seeing Nintendo got the most votes, it made me re-think. And yeah, I would have to agree that Nintendo definitely revolutionized consol game playing. Nintendo is and always has been quite excellent, and can always be trusted to bring you great gaming enjoyment. In other words... you can't go wrong with Nintendo. I still think Nintendo should have stuck with the cartridges instead of going to disks like everyone else. Of course improving on memory capacity, but cartridges load a hell of a lot faster than cd/dvd's do, and are more durable. However, XBOX definitely brought console gaming to a whole new level of awsomeness, and of course rulez!
Boffa Jones Veteran Posted October 27, 2003 Veteran Share Posted October 27, 2003 To the atari guy, voting for the atari over nintendo, to me at least, is like voting the n64 over the playstation.
MR_Candyman
I'd say playstation because it was the first POPULAR cd based system. BUT the Amiga CD32 was the first 32 bit console, and also the first cd based one. Not to mention it just generally rocked. I wish more people woulda bought them as they are VERY useful. I remember taking my driving exam on a CD32, which was hooked up to a network (also a first for a console) and was able to print the results! I owned one aswell, and the games just plain rocked, especially for the time.
devBrian
To the atari guy, voting for the atari over nintendo, to me at least, is like voting the n64 over the playstation. Atari was released a LONG time before Nintendo was. N64 & Playstation were released in the same era.

-=SD=-
True that Atari started it but what I think what really got people into gaming and what took those games to new levels was the NES. Atari was the building blocks while the NES was the house ;) I like both, so either doesn't matter to me which is picked, they both have good cases going for them. I just feel the NES brought those titles that people wanted, and really sparked years of gaming for a lot of people.
b mitchell
NES for one simple reason. D-Pad. Thye invented it, and you will never get rid of it. It is the essential piece on a controller.
MegaManXcalibur
I'm going with the NES, it's what brought a lot of people into mainstream gaming. It's still the best system of all time if you ask me.

CrimsonBlur
NES, no doubt. The Atari, even though "popular" as we would call it, was not nearly as popular at the time as it is in our minds when we look in retrospect, especially us geeky people. Now think of the NES. Everyone I knew had an NES, even some of my friends that were, shall we say, monitarily (is that a word?) challenged. Even though the earlier consoles, like the Atari machines, came first, the NES changed the way the whole world looked at console gaming and brought it into mainstream culture. djgramma
No matter how many consoles I have gotten the past years, nothing will beat the best console of them all, which I think spawned a generation of serious gamers to such awesome games as Metroid and The Legend of Zelda. The SNES build upon the original NES and just dominated for the longest time with bigger, better and stronger games and more and more technology based around the games. Screw all the other ones, updated graphics can't replace hours and hours of gameplay on such a low bit game as Link to the Past. The sports games were also good to note, as they were stunning and simple. I played numerous hockey games on there, equivaling my brothers in battles that I just can't do on the PS2 now. Hehe, needless to say I've moved on to the computer now and never looked back. MindTrickz
Atari brought it! Nintendo raised it and made it what it was! So without a doubt it has to be the Nintendo! Playstation brought it into the Next-Gen and has been carying it ever since, but for those who claim that Xbox revolutionized it by haveing Online gaming, thats just plain dumb, since Online gaming was announced for the PS2 way before the Xbox was ever released!
