mrk Reviews Posted October 30, 2003 Reviews Share Posted October 30, 2003 -- Problem -- Some of you may have expereinced on downloaded or self made movies using the SViD codec that when you go to fast forward or skip a section that the movie will stall or stutter/freeze. This is a problem that might always be with the XViD codec but there is a solution to solving it which I have found. Simply changing the FourCC mode from the default XViD to DiVX. (If you encoded your own wvid movies using the divx fourcc mode then this will not matter for you) -- Background -- Firstly what is FourCC? FourCC used - the FourCC code determines which codec your encoded movie will be played with. Leaving it as XVID means that the XviD directshow filters will be used for maximum quality/compatibility. You can also select to use the DivX 4.x or 5.x codec to playback your encoding, which may or may not work properly As quoted from above, it may or may not work given the available modes BUT if you have DiVX 5 or above installed then using the "DiVX" option (see below) will work flawlessly (tested on several XViD movies). I also find using the DiVX FourCC is slightly better in quality of rendering, I use DiVX 5.1 Pro codec. -- Solution -- Simply Follow these steps 1) Install GSPOT (nothing sexual) and run it, open the XViD encoded AVI file you want to scan and let it analyse it. You will see something like Look at the top right and notice the "4CC" bit, this si what you wnat to check, the rest is all informational goodness, helpful in other areas. My movie above already has the divx 4cc changed to it so that's all fine there but yours may not, it may say "XViD" in which case read on. 2) Download and run AViC (AVI Tools pack) it needs no installing and is a small utility which looks like All you have to do is open the avi file in this tool or drag the movie into it's window and it will correctly detect the original and current FourCC modes, the 2nd box is what you change to "DiVX" and then click Apply then quit it. Now if you open BS Player (BEST) and click options and browse to video tab and make sure Overlay mode 1 is enabled (see below) (best quality mode), ok it and play the movie as normal :), no more skipping/freezing of xvid movies. This is just the first time, for any other movies you have just change the 4CC as above and play as normal, simple. It just seems the divx decoder is far more stable than xvids and although the movie is encoded in xvid and you are using the divx filter to decode it you still need both codecs installed. maybe this will help someone, I dunno but it's there and I was bored
