Shipping slip: Redwood City man tried to mail meth, cocaine with FedEx

A Redwood City man who tried to ship three kilograms of methamphetamine and 100 grams of cocaine to the Philippines was arrested after he asked FedEx why his packages hadn't arrived there, according to the San Mateo County District Attorney's Office.

Gabriel Uribe-Bautista, 37, pleaded not guilty Wednesday to three charges related to the sale and transport of illegal drugs, District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said.

Bautista dropped off two boxes containing the drugs at a FedEx store in Redwood City on Aug. 24; he was arrested on Sept. 12.

"The packages were intercepted when going through Customs," Wagstaffe said. "He called in to check on the status of his packages and that's what led them to arrest him."

On Wednesday, Criminal Presiding Judge Craig Parsons granted Bautista's bail reduction request; as a result, bail was dropped from about $4 million to $1 million. By late afternoon, however, Bautista had not yet posted bail, Wagstaffe said.

A pretrial hearing is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. on Dec. 14; a jury trial is scheduled for 8:45 a.m. on Jan. 14.

Bautista's defense attorney Esther Aguayo said she would not be able to comment on the case Wednesday.
