Application: Linux System Script

Awesome can you try this one

Little better, picked up the distro name this time correctly, although still showing both Ubuntu and Debian ASCII art. Note a new line of text from lsb_release above the two errors.

Heh I'd suspect not too many people with server-only installs are going to worry about this sort of script anyway, I was just trying it out of curiosity. It's not a bother, not doing anything important today. I see you got the stray Debian logo out of it this time.

echo $display

Non-existant.

root@server7:~# echo $DISPLAY

root@server7:~#

Edit Derp -- I'm going through SSH, no forwarding, so that won't exist I think. Enabled X forwarding in my client, new result. It's my day off, I left the brain at my other desk.

root@server7:~# echo $DISPLAY
localhost:10.0

with x forwarding are you still getting the same two errors?

Yes -- X is enabled in the client, but it's still not actually installed on the server, nor do I have the Mate desktop. Those two will always return errors for setups like mine. Same result in the script as in my previous post. For me I'm not terribly worried about it, just passed it along in case you're hate leaving loose ends like I do.. I'd guess not a whole lot of interest in something like this for a server install.. they make for boring screenshots. :D

hmmm i though i had fixed this lol

*buntus carry over the /etc/debian_version

this is why it picks up as debian

when did you download it?

download this one and try it maybe i forgot to update the file

http://www.haggistech.co.uk/ubuntutest.tar.gz

yeah as max says

open a terminal

go to the filder the script is in so for example

cd /home/haggis
do
chmod +x stats.sh
then do
./stats.sh
Thanks.

This might sound stupid but when I CD my directory, says it's "No such file or directory"

I am pretty sure it's correct. I have it in my Documents folder /home/bman/Documents

What am I doing wrong?

This might sound stupid but when I CD my directory, says it's "No such file or directory"

Is the capitalization correct when you're typing it? *Nix is case sensitive, throws me off all the time. "documents" and "Documents" are two different directories as far as Linux is concerned where out of the box Windows won't care either way, easy mistake to make if you bounce back and forth a lot. Most file managers have a "Open terminal here" sort of context menu too if it helps any, depends on which file manager you're using.. some aren't as flexible/convenient as others.

I have tried it both ways without luck.

And no option like that in my file manager. Default Ubuntu 12.04...

Best file manager? Any out there with tabs?

Nautilus - the default file manager in Ubuntu - is my favorite file manager, and it does have tabs. You can either go to "File->New Tab" to open a new tab or use the keyboard shortcut "Ctrl+T". You can also add an "Open in Terminal" option to the Nautilus context menu as described here.

    • Chrome is Google's commercial web browser product; it consists of their proprietary features (Googlified everything including profile sync) plus their chromium project barebones web browser. Google developers control the chromium project. The chromium project is the "core" for the web browser product from other vendors including Microsoft Edge (their own proprietary features), Opera (their own features), Brave (their own features), etc... The "downstream" teams at Microsoft, Opera, Brave, etc., can either integrate their original MV2-supporting code into future builds, or they can integrate chromium wholesale and simply add-on their own features/functionalities -- their 'current' build pipeline, so to speak. THIS is why changes at the chromium project affect so many products besides only Google's commercial Chrome browser. -- Edit to add: The chromium project is open-source, and is the piece that's Google's code contribution to the W3C and world wide web at large; there are no licensing fees for others to use the code in their own products... which is what they do. Other browser engines do exist (Firefox's for example) but it's nearly impossible to have both engines bundled into the same 1 browser product.
    • You're comparing settler colonies to colonized war torn nations. It's easy to become the richest by coming in and stealing other people's land, culture and resources.
    • ABP has become "old news" when MV3 started rolling out. They've gone downhill and is now simply irrelevant..... in my experience.
    • About two years ago, I switched to Brave and haven't looked back.
    • FWIW StatCounter has been trash for over 25+ years! Back in the day (circa 2000 and GeoCities pre-Blogger era), it was useful to paste a number on your webpage indicating how many visitors you had. In the ensuing 25+ years, they've grown in reputation and changed their ways... but their overall consumer value has remained abysmal. Serious marketing agencies only cite StatCounter when there's literally no other sources available to support any marketing claims! They are the absolute lowest threshold serious companies use to push any sort of narrative about this-or-that happening. Besides their credibility being what it is, they are forever subject to quality issues. They're so bad that my DNS-level ad-filter prevents me from even viewing their main website! HA!
