Is this permission??

Recommended Posts

I've just got a reply to an email I sent to the original author of block OS, here's what it said:

Hello. Although it is saying that his wants to re-distribute

blockOS, please do not re-distribute original blockOS. it is

satisfactory if it is blockOS which you changed -- it is . If

it finishes making, please also show me(^^).

To me that sounds like I'm not allowed to simply redistribute an unaltered set. I also think it means I can go ahead with the set and he wants to see the finished product. Does this sound right to you guys?

That to me sounds like you have the 'go ahead' to make your version without any hassle and that he would like to see it when it is finished.

Sounds good to me, I just hope the original author like the new updated ones.

Here's a little preview, I hope you can tell what the original one is :s :

Of course it is permission, just make sure that non of the original blockOS images are in there - which by the look of it dazzla isn't likely to happen. BlockOS was incredibly popular in the skinning community, in fact I know dozens who use it all the time - mark my words you will have many more fans once they see the incredible upgrade your giving them ... now stop reading and get busy - quicker - the fans are restless :)

my oppinion is that you're not selling or making any profit over what you've made based on others' works, why should worry about permissions when it's just a promotion for their -the creators of those icons- works.

anyone agrees with me give it a bump...

Unfortunatly opinion is not the issue. It matters very little what a persons opinion is and what really matters is copyright law and obaying the simple request to seek permission to do a conversion/port/update whatever.

My opinion is that it is far wiser for dazzla et al to seek permission to do conversions/ports/updates of another persons work, because in doing so they are working within the rules of copyright law - to put it another way they are showing common respect for the person who did the original work and that person is the holder of the copyright from the very moment they created (in this case) the original images. Do not underestimate whether or not that person will use copyright law against any person who breaks their copyright - people have done so in the past and they will do so in the future. In the process the people who gain most are the lawyers and almost invariably it is the lawyers representing the person who's copyright was broken.

dazzla, i dont think you even need his permission. this is your interpretation of his work, meaning he doesn't really have much presidence.

btw, those icons are pretty nice. i'd work on sharpening up the larger resolutions though (add small hard lines to indicate where teh shadows end, etc).

Dazzla is correct in asking for permission for a few reasons;

1.) It's the nice thing to do.

2.) He would be in violation of U.S. copyright law if he published the original set (even if it is converted to a new digital medium)without permission from the contents creator.

3.) It's the nice thing to do.

Think about it. Sure he could just convert icons all day long without permission. Would he be sued? Probably not. Most people aren't going to court over an icon set or wallpaper. (except for those French b@st@rds that ripped almost everyone in the skinning community...)

Most artists enjoy people redistributing their work, with proper credit. Looks like the creator of Block OS even wants the new PC format when Dazzla is finished for his own collection.

Artists like Mike at MMicons who have not given their permission to convert to the Windows format are really hurting nobody but themselves in terms of popularity and portfolio. Mac OS's are not the end all of computers.
