silvrrwulf
Style XP Beta 5 is out, but has a 30 day limitation on it. so mush for the "style XP will always be free" crap they had on thier site. The new interface is slick, but if I were you, I'd stick with beta 4.3 that'll never expire. It's "only" 19.95 to register now. What do ya'll think? ~SilverWulf

BroChaos Veteran Posted January 19, 2002 Veteran Share Posted January 19, 2002 hehe, ummm, i think you're a little behind on the times :lick: stylexp 4.3 is shareware too, i think everything back to 3 is. what do you need it for anyways? just stick with the hacked uxtheme.dll unless you like bloatware. just out of curiosity, is the non-plus version the one that's totally free forever? i thought i remember someone saying that they were gonna keep that promise. ciao! joe
Danrarbc
All of the previous versions of StyleXP will expire. They didn't make it entirely clear, but all of their "betas" have been shareware.
Legolas
It's been Shareware for the last 5 or 6 versions. Anyone working on a StyleXP clone program? I mean, all it does is hotpatch the Theme System and provide a theme preview system, I can't imagine that a real coder would have too much trouble writing something like this. Just my thoughts, if not, I think I'll just go 'fix' my own DLL.
silvrrwulf
The early ones will expire to? where do you see that? And as for using the hacked dll file, does that mean if I uninstall Style Xp I can still use themes? Talk about a quick response from all! ~SilverWulf
fr33k
Legolas just use the beta3 version
Legolas
Style XP About 2.8 MB download. Allows XP to use 3rd party skins. Shareware - 19.95 Registration. ToothPaste Skin Pack Style XP Plus About 5 MB download. Allows XP to use 3rd party skins. Shareware - 19.95 Registration. ToothPaste Skin Pack CoughDrop Skin Pack Community Skin Pack #1 So much for promises of keeping a free version. I wonder what MS would think about a company selling a patch for their own DLL...hmmm...
freeza
copy the dll cause im not sure if stylexp will replace the hacked one w/ your original, then uninstall and replace the dll again ;D
fr33k
freexa thats what I did. I deleted the tgtbak then copied the tgt's hacked version and renamed it to the backup version then uninstalled styles xp. seems to be working fine
whack
The betas are not shareware people they are free you just have to reinstall them if they expire. All the betas are free and will be free it goes oficially shareware when they release RC1 at which point they will make a uxtheme.dll hack publicly available for free. Or at least thats the last I read from them. But anyway noone ever seems to listen to me when I post this

fr33k
when this all started tgtsoft clearly posted that themers could potentially make a lot of money if there themes were good enough. Now that sounds to me like they intended for this to be shareware from the biggining. just because they say the betas were free doesn't mean that the ride would be free forever. At this point you have three choices either hack your own dll, use beta3, or buy a license.

I thought Style XP didn't take any resources from the PC? No footprints. Please explain.
Gott
Well ... great! they made a skinning programm skinable. :right: Wow ... i?m so fascinated! :right: That?s for all the guys that want to change their theme every five minutes and don?t like the native :right: interface ("XP Display Options"). Wow ... now we can make skins for the skinning utility ... sooo great! I will send TGTSoft all my money ... I believe 20 $ are simply not enough for this great looking (though completely useless) Interface. :cross: I?ll stick with my good ol? uxtheme.dll ! Gott
Style XP used a hacked dll from beta 1-3 ... the newer betas do the same hack, but now "in memory" on startup. The "hacked" uxtheme.dll is the best choice in my opionion. It uses zero resources and offers the same functionality as Style XP (except the stupid user interface that has the same options as XP has alreadyincluded - "wee, i can change my desktop wallpaper!"). And the dll can be deinstalled in seconds: Simply run SFC with the Windows XP CD inserted. And the hack can be manually (as described on this board) or use the pre-cracked uxtheme.dll from Style XP beta 1-3. I won?t install a stupid software that makes the option to change my desktop wallpaper and screensaver skinable! And i will NOT pay any money for that. I really liked TGTSofts attemps at first ... I really thought about buying StyleBuilder. But lying to a big fan community ("StyleXP will be free") is not the way to go ...
hurting101
I agree. I thought at first, I would stick with StylesXP for the hell of it, and not bother with uxtheme.dll. They said it would be freeware. Now, if I could replace the dll I would :(

Scorbing
OK. I have the hacked .DLL so what is the procedure to replace it?
Kibler
Why are you having trouble replacing the dll? If you cant seem to do it in safe mode, either boot into dos if you are using a fat32 partition or use the Recovery Console if you have NTFS.
