How to recover Windows 8 Upgrade Key

Recommended Posts

Hi,

When Windows 8 first came out I took advantage of the upgrade offer and upgraded. However I didn't like the change and reverted back to Windows 7.

I'm now wanting to give it another go, but cannot find the upgrade key, I would have thought they would have mailed it me but cannot find it, I can only find the media centre upgrade key they mailed me.

Is there any way of getting it back? I don't want to pay nearly ?200 to upgrade.

Wasn't the key emailed to you? I was mailed the Windows Media Center add-on key.

I found this on Microsoft Community (http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_8-windows_install/lost-my-windows-8-product-key-and-confirmation-e/529e1118-b230-4f95-b936-ba3f163b8c38)

''You can call Microsoft Store customer service. They can re-send the email to you, if you can provide some information about the order.

Your bank statement is pointless info in relation to this, have any of the following handy:

  • The email you used a the moment of the order, or where you received your confirmation.
  • Your phone number
  • Your full name as it appears in the card information you used when ordering.

Any of those are good leads to getting the info you need. Also, be courteous, remember you are dealing with people who take hundreds of calls a day, many by people who are upset and often aggresive. Kindness and patience will get you far.''

The upgrade keys are sold by different store front with its own support numbers.

Go there and download the tool that starts the checker and upgrade, they mention the name somewhere here.

Are you using the iso that you downloaded for the upgrade, plus you already used it once so it wont work unless you talk to MS?

The media centre key may not work either you will have to talk to MS on the phone with that one as the exipry date has come and gone on the free keys.

It should work if you use it on the same machine.

  • 3 years later...

You can call the manufacturer and request a Windows 8 DVD. There is usually a sticker on the side of an OEM computer (bottom for laptops) with the key. I have done this for clients several times with Dell and HP, and they got their DVD each time. If there is no sticker on the computer, check the paperwork that came in the box for a "certificate of Authenticity" that should have the sticker or code.
