mrk Reviews Posted November 6, 2003 Reviews Share Posted November 6, 2003 Pros: Shopping Mal security officer John Turturro as "Harry Caine" confused and left alone by the "murder" of his wife sets out to find out the reason why his wife was killed. This is a very surreal film, the whole ambience is dark and vivid, the music is very mysterious and captures what Harry is feeling throughout the film perfectly and rightly so, he delivers an outstanding performance and this is to be expected, they needed a character whom could keep the pace of a film revolving around him only and this is what we get. There is one scene where we see Harrys supposed "change" ***SPOILER*** When he gets shot in the elevator you see him breathe heavily and BANG the elevator button, at this point you are left thinking is he really a psycho and does he really kill the cop (following scene), this was a very dark scene, even the pool of red blood in complete darkness emphasised this ***END OF SPOILER*** You never know what's real or what's not real in this film and even if you do you always are left ith uncertainty on what Harry is thinking, who killed Harrys wife? and why? that is Harrys reason, his purpose and we know this especially form his "surveilance tape nights" in effort to notice a re-occuring face to go by in trailing the killer and his photo ID wall/cards (almost like Psy's in One hour Photo but less messed up), why he repeatedly states he is not a murderer when asked about killing the killer if he ever found him, his life is about reason, he wants to know to let it go and until then he never can, we are shown this throughout teh film and only near the end do we see Harry let it all go but are never given solid ending, we are left to think for ourselves what appened but we know certain facts about what did from previous scenes. Hopefully I've not spoiled much about the film as this is a great watch from the story (which might be common by now, wife gets killed, husband goes in search of killer) but this is different, it twists and turns leavig you dizzy and confused but that is what's so great about it. John Turturro also played Chuck in Anger management, you know short temper Chuk?, it was refreshing and quite surprising to see him play such a melow role and deliver it so well without even raising his voice Cons: The name! Next to The Life of David Gale and One Hour Photo this is the 2nd best film I've seen in the last few months. I give it 8/
