I have had the Extreme base station before....outstanding router. The extreme base station is a full router with wireless whereas the express base station is just an AP. Neztea
I have not personally used any of those routers, but I just recently purchased a Asus RT-N66U (http://www.asus.com/Networking/RTN66U/) and this is a really great router with awesome performance. Install AsusMerlin`s Firmware on it and you will have so many features such as OpenVPN to name one of them. Also if you want to be ahead on the cure there is always the Asus RT-AC66U (http://www.asus.com/Networking/RTAC66U/) Neztea lars77 1 Share

The extreme is a brilliant router wireless wise, but it's also one of the least configurable out there. I have a normal net gear router doing my routing, and an AirPort Extreme doing the wireless (in bridge mode). Works fantastically (on my MacBook Pro, I can push 120Mbps on wireless between floors). Which basically puts it into nothing more than an AP. It only has 1 GB port and 1usb port. What else would you call it? ****...if you actually used the express as a full router then you have issues. Astra.Xtreme
I have the latest Extreme and it's rock solid. By far the best router I've ever had. In the past I've had various Linksys and Asus routers, and I had occasional cut-outs with heavy load, but I haven't had a single one with the Airport. I'd definitely recommend it. I would suggest that you should install a third party firmware such as DD-WRT or Tomato, which is compatible with most linksys routers and it seems to fix issues that people have with their routers and you get many features, some features that the airport express doesnt have. You can quite easily connect your modem to the ethernet port and use it as a wireless router. People who use ethernet are the minority these days. The only thing it's missing are the ethernet ports, and the USB hard drive sharing feature. Other than that, it has the same feature set as the extreme. If you need to hard-wire devices, then no, it's not the router for you. But it is a router, and not an access point (access points don't do any kind of routing at all).
