Hidden Places

The White House, the Pentagon, Area 51 -- we investigate the world's most secret places.

Aliens in caves, Masonic symbols in Washington, D.C., architecture, U.S. military studies of alien spacecraft... just because you're paranoid, doesn't mean they're not out to get you! On this week's episode we go around the globe to investigate the world's most secret and mysterious places.

Secret design

To the patriot, Washington, D.C., is a shrine to American history and the cradle of democracy. To the paranoid, it's a city filled with secrets and cover-ups. Indeed, the capital of the United States is probably home to more conspiracy theories than anywhere else on Earth.

Many believe that the grid design of the city is laid out according to Masonic principles. Washington, D.C., is laid out in a series of pentagrams, a key Masonic symbol. Conspiracy theorists believe there were sinister motives among the founders when they set up Washington as a power base from which they could rule the world. Some say the design gives the city an almost occult power.

The Pentagon

Located in Hell's Bottom in Arlington, Va., just over 3 miles from the White House, the Pentagon is the largest government building in the world. It's the headquarters of the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, and Air Force, and it's so shrouded in secrecy that its very name has become associated with sinister plots and dark designs.

Its secretive nature has meant that over the years the Pentagon has been associated with a number of extraordinary events, from allowing the CIA to test LSD on volunteer GIs in the 1950s to spraying germs on unwitting citizens in a U.S. subway during a military experiment. But the Pentagon insists its operations in this huge fortress are benign.

The Greenbrier

Deep in the forests of West Virginia lies one the most heavily guarded U.S. military secrets of the Cold War. Sprawling across 6,500 acres, the Greenbrier is one of the most exclusive resorts in the world. But underneath it is the secret Greenbrier. Behind 25-ton nuclear blast doors is a network of tunnels containing everything needed to support hundreds of members of the U.S. Congress during a nuclear war.

Area 51

For decades the U.S. government denied the existence of Area 51. It didn't even appear on maps. Only a Soviet satellite photograph proved that Area 51 was a secret air base in the Nevada desert used to test advanced aircraft.

This top-secret military base was set up in the 1950s to develop secret projects. But it wasn't until 1987 that the U.S. government admitted that there was an Area 51 in Nevada. Since then the complex has generated extraordinary conspiracy theories. Some theorists believe the U.S. military has acquired alien flight technology and is using Area 51 to build the next generation of military aircraft.

IIRC, it (Greenbriar) is actually a touristy place now. I also believe the hotel (A rather nice one, at that,) is still open and running - but I /don't/ remember 100%.

There's been countless TV shows and such about Greenbriar. I imagine even a simple google of it will turn up lots. It -was- a secret - but the installation underneath it has since been declassified and 'opened up'.

Believe Greenbriar is still available with a parallel government always ready, etc. should extreme crisis occur. Some media channels (like Discovery) covered it anew following 9/11.

Indeed didn't look like they'd done much to it since the 60s though.

Don't think it has to do with people looking out for themselves -- more a secure place whereby some form of a government can continue functioning with less physical exposure should need arise.
