Get Ready for an Escape From New York Reboot

Ready to read something silly? The dystopian future depicted in 1981?s Escape From New York was supposed to be 1997. Considering its lack of prescience, it?s probably about time someone tries again to portray a future New York from which an ex-soldier tries to escape. Good thing Deadline reports that mega-producer Joel Silver (the Die Hard movies, The Matrix movies) has announced intentions to reboot the film. No other major details have been revealed; however, considering the original was partially a satire of New York City?s eighties crime problem, we can only assume this one will focus mostly on rent prices and convincing cab drivers to take you to Brooklyn.

According to NY Daily News Tom Hardy and Jason Statham are in line to star as Snake Plissken - the role made famous by Kurt Russell - in the planned remake of John Carpenter's Escape From New York. Jeremy Renner had previously been linked to lead the cast in the reboot of the 1981 sci-fi classic, but it now appears production bosses at Studio Canal are keen to land The Dark Knight Rises villain Hardy or The Transporter star Statham to portray anti-hero Plissken.

Studio Canal executives picked up the rights to the remake from New Line bosses in 2011.

A director has yet to be appointed, although Breck Eisner, Len Wiseman and Brett Ratner have all been attached to the project in recent years.
