What's the point of Blu-Ray ads on a Blu-Ray disc?

Recommended Posts

I'd love to know what the point is for "coming soon movie" trailers being on ANY physical media..... because by the time you buy the darn thing the movie could of been long out...

They want you to be able to upgrade your device, however, one of the major features of Bluray internet connected players is the Bluray has the ability in most cases to load fresh trailers off the internet to show you as well as new advertisements so that the content of the advertisements are valid even if you watch it a year or more after its initial release.

However, so far as i am concerned if you are going to load the disc with ads i should get to pay less for it.

and they'd say "you are already paying less for it because of those ads"

The first thing I do is rip the .mkv onto my hard drive and skip the ads.

I just purchased seasons 1 and 2 of 'Treme' on Blu-ray.

I don't own a Blu-ray player, but will download the 720p rips. That's fair enough, right?

It wouldn't fly in court.

The trailers make sense though. They are advertising for a product you may not own. An ad trying to convince you to get your movies on bluray being loaded on a bluray disc makes no sense.

It's the same reason why there are ads and previews before movies in the theater. It's a way to exploit us and make money.

You can usually skip or fast forward through them anyway, so not a big deal.

yeah the courts would say "you where still distributing them illegally"..... or "part of the distribution of them"...

you're funny, most of the discs I've gotten lately have the forward buttons disabled during the ads and previews...... so you are forced to watch them.....

Doubt they thought it through much.

Kind of like the "you wouldn't download a car so why do you download movies" and FBI notices they put on there, they're pretty good at aiming at the wrong target :p

The skip button is usually blocked, but every player I've ever had lets you fast forward through anything.

You'd find it hard to 'downoad a car', perhaps you meant 'steal a car'?

Waits for first douchebag to contribute "People still use disks?"...

i try not to be a douche, but i haven't rented, bought, watched, lent, borrowed a BlueRay ever. And not for DVD either for the last 7 years.

no, the FBI actually said download a car.......

Indeed... Funny thing about it, I believe a lot of people actually would download a car if they could :p

I think some people have misunderstood the OP.He is trying to work out why they put ads about blu-ray, on blu-ray discs, you're watching on a blu-ray player. Why is it extolling the virtues of blu-ray to you when you already have it and are about to watch it? In other words: why is it telling you how great the thing you already own and are about to watch is? He isn't talking about advertising trailers to you.

It would make sense to have ads on DVDs about blu-rays about you would be advertising a different and better medium. But why advertise on the thing that it already is?

The only thing I can think of is that it is to explain the differences and advantages of blu-ray over DVD to new users. I can't remember what those ads look like. It has been a while since I watch one of my blu-rays.

Indeed... Funny thing about it, I believe a lot of people actually would download a car if they could :p

People would just old fashion jack a car if they knew they would get away with it.

Oh pretty much the same here. But you (and I) haven't posted that question. People say it like "I haven't used one in ages, let's mock those who do". They know the answer to the question, but are attempting to look superior :)

If I could take a perfect 1:1 copy of a car without taking anything away from the original car or driver...

And then not be forced to sit through a series of 3 minute adverts for other cars, and then the FBI preaching about why I shouldn't download a horse!

I haven't seen those since some of the early blu rays, when the media was new.

Guess they must still be around.

As to the other comments about forcing you to watch trailers etc. I totally hate that. One of the best movies IMO was completely ruined when transferred to blu ray. Apollo 13. It takes you over 5 minutes from inserting the disc into your player to being able to watch the actual movie because of all the forced crap. Unfortunately most universal blu rays are like that.
