According to an official press release, FX?s ?Fargo? will follow an all-new ?true crime? story featuring new characters and the trademark humor, murder and ?Minnesota nice? that has made the film an enduring classic.

?For years, people have tried to adapt this Academy Award-winning gem into a TV series with no success,? said Landgraf. ?I have always loved Fargo and I was skeptical about this as a series, but Noah Hawley?s script made me a believer. This script is so good and so true to the tone of the original movie.?

The original Frances McDormand-starring ?Fargo? told the story of pregnant police chief Marge Gunderson, tasked with traversing the snow-filled landscapes of Minnesota to solve a series of murders linked to the dirty dealings of an inept car salesman (William H. Macy), as things slowly spiraled out of control. The film also featured ?Boardwalk Empire?s? Steve Buscemi, while McDormand won the Oscar for Best Actress for the film, as did Joel and Ethan Coen for original screenplay.

Curiously enough, ?Fargo? had already once failed to be adapted for television, with a pilot starring ?The Sopranos? and ?Nurse Jackie? star Edie Falco in the lead role, and directed by Kathy Bates. The episode was shown during Trio?s 2003 ?Brilliant But Cancelled? series of failed TV shows.

As FX prepares to launch a limited series based on the beloved Coen Brothers film Fargo (which will share the same name), it has announced that an Emmy-award winning director was climbing aboard and heading to North Dakota.

Adam Bernstein has signed on to direct the premiere episode and will also executive produce it. Bernstein won his Emmy for 30 Rock. He has also directed episodes of Californication, House of Lies, United States of Tara, Scrubs, Rescue Me, Bored to Death and Breaking Bad.

The limited series is scheduled to run for 10 episodes and will focus on a new "true crime" story taking place in the town of Fargo. It will include new characters but retain the "Minnesota nice" that appeared in the Oscar-nominated film.

A spring 2014 release is planned for the adaptation.

The show is being produced by FX Productions and MGM Television. MGM is the lead studio and is in charge of distribution of the series outside of North America. Noah Hawley is writing the adaptation and executive producing, with the Coens and Warren Littlefield.
