JasonWebb
There is a new site up at http://xp-refresh.net that exposes the refresh rate limitations in Windows XP. The goal of the site is to get users to contact Microsoft about them so they will eventually get fixed. I know you all hate getting low refresh rates in games as much as I do ;). Please visit the site and learn how to help get Microsoft?s attention so they can fix these refresh rate problems in future service packs and releases of Windows. Redmak Administrators Posted January 20, 2002 Administrators Share Posted January 20, 2002 I remember you posting about this before. Do you really feel this is such a huge problem or are you just in need of attention for your site ;) nvrefix is such an easy way to fix this and you only have to use it once. JasonWebb
Nope, this is the first time I've mentioned it in the forum. My goal of the site is not popularity... my goal is to get results. I just want to help further the out of the box experience in Windows. As for the fix, I'll quote from my site: "Even if you own a NVIDIA card and have fixed the problem in games with the utility mentioned above, wouldn't you still love to have an operating system that just worked right out of the box, instead of having to install and configure a 3rd party program to make things work right?? Wouldn't you love to just forget about refresh rates altogether?" Oh, and not everyone has a NVIDIA card either. Another thing that is just as important as the gaming problem is that MS got rid of the "Optimal" setting from Win9x. Wouldn't you like to have that included in the next release of Windows so you don't have to worry about desktop refresh rates when you change resolutions? Personally, it would be nice to not need any utilities.... lemme know what you all think... Jason

JustinLerner
To force the refresh rates, you MUST know what resolutions and refresh rates your monitor is capable of displaying. IF you set the wrong refresh rates/resolution/bit depth for your MONITOR OR video card, you can ruin your monitor. I'm using a 7 year old 15" Compaq monitor right now at 800x600 and 75Hz, so most of your newer monitors can support 75hz or 85hz at 1024x768 or higher resolutions. That said, here's what you do. For the monitor, select the exact monitor driver (installed as .inf file) for your monitor, NOT the Plug n Play monitor driver. OR, IF the manufacturer didn't make one, use the (Standard Monitor Driver), NOT the Plug n Play monitor driver. Select a Standard Monitor Driver like Super VGA 1280x1024 @ 75Hz. Whatever resolution you select, you MUST select the 75Hz refresh option or any option with a specified refresh rate. Once you do this, you can manually select refresh rates for your monitor. REMEMBER to only select the refresh rates your monitor supports (pull out the manual.) Finally, back in the Display Properties, uncheck the option 'Hide modes that this monitor cannot support' on the Monitor tab. Now you can manually select the refresh rates your monitor is MADE to display, even if the driver isn't allowing this refresh rate. Let me know how well it works. purush
My three year old Dell Trinitron 19" monitor is running XP at 100Hz and it looks good.
JustinLerner
I have sensitive eyes and can tell the difference between 85hz and 100hz. When I previously used a 21" monitor at 100hz I loved it.
HoagieKat
I'm running an ATI Radeon, no need to fix the refresh rate on the latest drivers, it's running 1600x1200 @ 75Hz (max refresh on my 21" monitor) games also run at 75Hz (though the frame rate is somewhat slower!)
