1993 vs 2013

Funny how some people think desktops like that is as effective and easy to use as a launcher as the start screen.

Firstly, it is called FOLDERS, second, it is called the start menu and cleaning your desktop up, smh!

I think the Microsoft design team learned design from 1990s textbooks when they designed the startscreen :woot:. Microsoft should have at least added a start screen photo background option and a scaling option too! The start screen looks like its straight out of the late 90s!

You really don't understand why they don't have highly graphical and photo backgrounds on the start screen ?

Yes, it is funny how not everyone uses a computer the same way you do.

The All Apps view is akin to how some people have their Desktops setup, but lacks basic functions such as folders, multiple selections and a context menu that doesn't require moving my eyes and the mouse cursor away for the thing I'm working with.

If I want to pin 10 things from this view (or the Search Results view) to the Start Screen it's a huge pain, as is getting into this view in the first place.

right click, all apps is hard ? Also you're not supposed to use that view, it's why you have search.

LOL, the colors in start screen right now looks as if Windows is stuck in safe mode or 256 color mode. Yes, Microsoft SHOULD have added a image background option to make booting your pc more appealing! The background colors in the start screen are honestly ugly!

firstly folders is a terrible way as far as efficiency go. and they would make that desktop even worse, instead of distinguishable but messy icon mosaic, you'd have lots of identical folders that require you to read the labels.

Going through various folders to find a link to different programs sounds a lot like Program Manager.. right thread for it I guess.

Actually, you're wrong, folders make everything more organized and easier to find things. Folders are a smart way to keep your desktop organized and clean looking! You can also organize your desktop further by moving stuff to like my pictures, etc! If you are lost, there is something called SEARCH in Windows also. I presume everyone who thinks Windows 8 is the best OS ever made are all newbies to Windows! SMH

No it's not hard, but it's a lousy UX. There is plenty of room up the top, next to the User icon, where they could have added an All Apps button, or even allow for an All Apps tile.

You still can't make multiple selections from the search results view.

And sometimes I can't remember the name of something I hardly ever use (e.g. Sandcastle, which I might use once every two months). So I have to go back into that view.

And saying "you're not supposed to use that view", well, it's there, I should be able to use it, and it shouldn't suck.

... so how did we begin with a relatively harmless comparison between multiple devices converging to one modern smartphone, and turn it into yet another Windows 8 thread? C'mon people.

The smart way is to not keep stuff on yoru desktop, which is always under what you're working on. you keep programs in your launcher where they're nice and organized and you keep documents and such in folders and such under your various "documents" folders.

This is obviously about the merits of the Windows 8 Start Screen.

The original comparison pic is invalid anyway. the camera in that, would be today comparable to a high end HD shoulder camera. The polaroid camera has no mobile equivalent since the phone doesn't have a built in printer.

The only objects the phone replaces is the walkman, phone and the newton(which I won't disgrace PDA's by calling a PDA), and partly the pager, but that's a yes or no depending on use case.

The watch, if they where to have a valid comparison, they should have used a pocket watch. a wrist watch is still just as valid an accessory today as back then. a phone requires you to pull it out and turn on the screen to check the time. which besides being a lot more work, looks very unprofessional, granted I know the youth today don't care about looking professional and if they actually want to be at work or in a meeting or such.

Mostly harmless.

Guilty. But let's be thankful it didn't turn into iPhone bashing. Such enermous temptation right from the start, but we are all cultured people - we are above that!

lol you mean the Motorola 8800X?

Despite the "big" antenna they didn't really have better reception. they had bigger antennas because they operated at lower frequencies, like the 450 net here in Scandinavia which at the time was one of the most advanced mobile networks. lower freqs means longer antennas though. of course lower frequencies also meant each base station had longer range. But there was a lot less of them as well so...

Also I seem to recall that older cell phones on system like the 450 networks actually had lower "radiation" than modern phones, especially since they keep cranking the transceiver power on those.

um, why are you telling me this? No offence, but I was just poking a little fun at Intrinsica........

Edit

A more diplomatic response would be, please redirect your reply to Intrinsica :)

Top one looks more productive.

Sure, if you're one of those types who can't adjust to change, which it seems like you are.

I'm not opposed to change, when I feel it's for the better. Heck back when XP came out I paid the $20 just to get my hands on a copy of RC2, then upgraded to the RTM. I ran it up until vista came out. Then I ran vista up until 7 came out, then I ran 7 up until 8 came out and there is where my displeasure started.
