NO SX - Work in progress

Recommended Posts

Apparently I cannot change the thread title on the thread about my filetype icons, but I have another update and wellll... It just isnt 'filetypes only' anymore, boys and girls.

On a day that I should've been churning out PHP code like theres no tomorrow (which, incidentally, is when my deadline is for the PHP project) I wasted some of my time in PhotoShop coming up with a few other icons.

I have dubbed the set 'NO SX', no relation to the band NOFX, because I'm kind of tired of having to use OS X icons for my systems just because Microsoft was stupid enough to stop designing icons at 48x48 (Or, for that matter, decide to make all the folders yellow again. Bah! Yellow! What am I, a toddler playing with LEGO or a professional?).

These icons might, in some ways, remind you of OS X.. But my main goal is to show that It's about time to show that thanks to stable OS's like Windows 2000 and Windows XP, you're allowed to have a cool computer without making it look like OS X. "I'd get a Mac but it's too expensive" is getting kinda old, kids. Be happy with the OS you have.

so.

The first sample of the non-file icons:

The first bunch of file icon samples are over in the other thread.

Feedback?

P.S. All icons are as alphablended as I could make them. If you've got 32 bits, flaunt all 32 bits of them, as my ex-girlfriend use to say. Err.. well you know what I mean.

Nice work - great to see someone taking a original idea and doing something with it that is beautiful and unique. Quite simply I cannot wait to see what the rest will look like.

It's work in progress (see topic). Most of these have not made it out of photoShop except for only in the 128x128 version ICOs.

I'm aiming this set to look best at the bigger sizes (64x64 is probably my main concern since thats the size I'll use them on myself) but also have a good equivalent in detail view and tile view.

Does tile view use 48x48s? This because the 32x32s so far look kinda ****ty.

They look so good in fact that you could submit them to xicons or mmicons in plain ol' .ico format and when they ask for permission to port them to mac format deny them and watch those mac addicts drool with a taste of their own medicine muhahaha (j/k).

On a more serious side, great work those are looking awsome.

i have plenty of friends running os x for work or for pleasure, so i'll probably end up releasing them either simultaniously or the mac package a bit after that.

mostly though, the icons'll be based on my personal requirements.. that IS my monitor, a Sony A200, with a few slight modifications in height =)

whatever you do get your prioritys right unilinear - I dread you being dragged into a please make me this icon and oh I want this one doing sort of situation, not when the quality of your work is just so great to look at - get the set done and once your happy with them post the link so we can all get our dirty hands on them. Then and only then do scoog his snickers bar:)

leqin.

thank you.

let me explain why and when i am making this set.

right now, im looking at a deadline for a programming project that is due, oh, how about, tomorrow morning. It's probably gonna take another two-three weeks to totally develop it (clients gonna love that part) and I've been working on this project every evening and weekend (including evenings) since january 2nd.

Basically I started making the set because i needed to do something that WASNT working. It's fun. Scoob, maybe I was a little too harsh, but it felt like you were breathing down my neck. I have more than one person breathing down my neck.. one's called a boss, one's called a client. And guess what? They PAY me. This icon set, and its 'audience', doesnt pay me a nickel.

Is that a problem? No. This is labor of love. I want this set to be on-par with sets ported from XIcons, which is still the defacto standard in this 'community'. I want it to be good. Look at my title under my name; I'm an anal perfectionist.

I will not release anything before I, personally, am satisfied. And should during the next few weeks, the development of this icon set become non-fun.. I'll probably put it off a little longer. Sorry.

I've been posting samples of what i'm making purely for the feedback. If you dont like something about an icon, TELL ME. I'd like to use the feedback to make 'em better. Sounds fair enough, no? You get to look, you get to be honest, I get to make my icons better. Good deal. I DIDN'T post the sample images just to 'turn people on'. Its work in progress, and I like feedback on the quality.

So. that's the story. Sorry Scoob, but you caught me at the wrong time when you posted that.

Thats one of the great hassles of the internet age - some people tend to forget others have real life to handle at one and the same time - the most important people are those who put the bread on the table, not them that want but have nothing to give except praise.

Now then about this "thing" you have over people breathing down your neck, in particular "the boss" thing you seem to have. Let me tell you that being a Boss is great fun, especially when you see your people doing things they never thought they could achieve. I know it makes me feel good and I know that my boss (cause even when your a boss somebody is always above you) thinks highly of my people because they achieve great results. They do it because they get their prioritys right - avoid being sidetracked into doing things that do not achieve the results we all agreed on. Never underestimate the wisdom of the Boss. As a Boss I would far sooner that somebody came to me with the job done right and late, rather than wrong and ahead of time. Wrong takes longer putting right than late and right in the first place.

Leqin,

I've been a 'boss'. It's a good job if you're good at it.. My problem boss isn't. I hope you're familiar with the Peter Principle? Basically he's clueless. =)

But it's all good. Im breathin. Meeting went well.

More icons soon. Probably trashcan and Dialup icon, maybe even as icos and not just a sample.
