Network Speed

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I have a 100Mpbs network at home. When I transfer files between the computers, the task manager shows only 0.5% to 10% of bandwidth usage. There is barely any hard drive activity. Is there a way to make Windows utilize at least half the avaliable bandwidth? I am using Full Duplex.

My desktop has a Kingston KNE110TX (Yes, I know it's old) and my laptop has a NetGear FA411 PC Card. It doesn't matter which computer, the actual speed is always around 3% usage.

Is there anything I can do about this?

I have a Linksys BEFSR41 v.2 router and Windows XP SP1 on all computers.

Thanks,

Yuxi Li

Hi :)

You're not the only one running WinXp and having a slow network problem

I myself also see that accessing or browsing shared folders is much slower with XP than it was with Win9x or WinME. File transfer also seems a bit slugish. I'm using a 10/100bmit switch not a hub with an Intel NIC. I've set one of the nic card properties to 100mbps full duplex , it was set to auto. Changing that didn't change much for me.

I've tried the registry edit, it did speedup the files and folders listing by just a little but still not as speedy as Win9x. Most other suggestions didn't do much.

To get the fastest speed with XP, you need to map the network drive. But I still need to find a way to get full speed without mapping the network drive.

I did map the network drive, and it made no difference. The driver is the only one avaliable, and changing the cables do not help.

I might also add that I have a network bridge between all three NICs, which was created by Windows. Does that make a difference?
