In something of a shocker, TNT has decided to extend its relationship with Dallas for another season, renewing the drama for a third season.

Speculation has run rampant that TNT would be dropping the program, after its numbers for the second season have plummeted from the solid ratings the debut season drew. Some believed that TNT did the show no favors by putting the second season in the winter, whereas the first season premiered in the summer, but TNT says it will air the third season beginning in the winter of this year, likely in early 2014.

"Dallas has built a passionately loyal following with its expertly woven storylines, clever twists and turns, and numerous outstanding performances by a cast that spans generations," said TNT, TBS and TCM president and head of programming Michael Wright. "Although we said goodbye to Larry Hagman and his iconic character J.R. Ewing this year, Dallas has many more stories left to tell, and the Ewing clan will continue to honor J.R.'s memory by keeping its audience surprised and delighted."

The second season has averaged 3.8 million viewers in Live+Seven Day returns - good (for cable), but not great, especially when you factor in how much TNT spends making the program.
