I've seen a few websites now where they've made a dock in flash which has pretty impressive animation. One is http://icons.suendigeverfuehrung.de/, This is a good example of the dock. There has also been someone who claims to have made a Flash dock for the desktop. My question is, do you lot reckon its any good? and should it be released...

There is a guy making this, and who is hoping to release it. Here's a preview on what he's working on.

Its looking pretty good to me, I just havent got a clue when he's gonna release. Contact him if you're interested, ask him how it's going :)

I don't think that is real, you can even see in the open window with all the icons that "Documents" is in a different font and not centered under the icon. Probably just put together in photoshop. If it actaully is real then that's a really great job

I've spoke to the author and he said that, that folder isn't actually a folder but just a html folder with jpegs for icons.

If you went to the web site I mentioned earlier, you'd know that the dock is real. There is a working version. I just wish I could download it, so i can edit it and put it on my desktop.

Here's an excerpt from an email he sent me:

The theme is real, however, you gotta remember, it's

not intended to be a theme. It is intended to be a

shell replacement. If you remember the FLash Desktop

Project, they were also developing a desktop in Flash

as well.

The About This Mac, of course is from Aqua-soft.,

however as for using windows blinds, I honestly don't

have it installed nor do I use it. Too much of a

resource hog.

Whether or not we can get this to be a true shell

replacement, remains to be seen. If you have had any

experience with shell replacement technology, you know

it can be taxing and very buggy and sometimes just

plain frustrating.

So we will either release it as one of three things.

1) Just a theme that will be compatible with Styles

XP, however, that is not what we are going for,

because OSX themes are a dime a dozen out on the net.

2) An app that opens up and takes over your desktop,

which will incorporate XML and Flash.

3) A complete Shell replacement for Explorer, that

will be stable and bugfree.

The windows you seen in the background are terminal

windows we are experimenting with a home brew version

of a system monitoring software to emulate like in

OSX.

The window you see next to the dock, is really a

webpage using jpgs as icons.

the border in IE is really a dummy border, so you see

what appears to be tabs, but really is just text.

Haven't gotten to the point if we can actually make

the functional.

Everything else is standard, with the exception of the

transparent title bars, which I cannot convey at this

point in how we achieved that.

And lastly the Itunes Skin is the test skin for Winamp

3. However between the skin being brand new and

Winamp being very unstable, it is not practical for

real-time using.

I hope this answers your questions, and I know I will

get flamed on the board, but I really do not care what

they think, I will let the product speak for itself.

Remember you can't make everyone happy, so just make

yourself happy first.

Dazzla, That is OS X in all it's glory, since when does windows use usr/bin/ ? that sounds like a nix system to me (OS X is nix). Also afaik you cant have both scroll arrows at the bottom in windows, I have never seen this done before... and doubt it can be done, this looks like a wonderfull screenshot of OSX, but if I'm wrong I would be happy to get my hands on this "theme package" :D I remember when people started saying my watercolour theme was fake, and it upset me, so I will be pesimistic about this one, but I wont rule it out entirely :)

Yeah, I didn't notice the two scroll arrows. I knew that usr/bin/ was Unix, but I was tempted to take his word. It is indeed looking less and less likely.

Slightly off topic then, does anyone know how to make one of those docks in flash, cause I was very impressed by that website with the working dock...

I was beginning to guess that. What make you 100% sure though?

Even if this is the case I'm still gonna work on the dock then put that on the desktop. 1 question, can you launch apps from flash?

You'll also notice that that a lot of the windows have a transparent titlebar but the main form isnt transparent!

Then look at the 2 terminal / shell windows, completely trasnparrent.

Thats an obvious fake, the guy is full of BS.

I was never convinced of the whole package but i was interested in the flash dock, after doing a bit of research, its entirely feasible to have a flash dock on an active desktop. So there... :lick: :D
