NBC has pulled the trigger and officially cancelled 'Smash' after two seasons on the air.

'Smash' was a favorite and a passion project for Bob Greenblatt, the Man in the Chair at NBC, and he fought to keep this one on life-support. In the end, the exorbitant sets and production costs of this Broadway themed series made the decision and 'Smash' had to go.

It was one of his first pilot orders and the series launched with one of the biggest marketing campaigns in years on the night after NBC?s broadcast of the Super Bowl last year. When 'Smash's ratings began to wane, NBC opted to move the series from Tuesday nights to Saturdays. The NBCcombination of the low ratings and the massive budget (for the talent involved as well as the scope of the production) has lead 'Smash' to the chopping block a little more each week.

'Smash' is about a Broadway theatre group staging an ambitious musical--but there is often more drama behind the scenes than on stage. The series stars Debra Messing ('The Starter Wife,' 'Will & Grace'), Jack Davenport ('FlashForward') and the inimitable Anjelica Huston ('The Postman Always Rings Twice,' 'The Royal Tenenbaums'). Huston is an Academy Award winner for her 1985 role in 'Prizzi's Honor' and has since been nominated for two more Oscars, for 'Enemies: A Love Story' and 'The Grifters,' in which she starred opposite John Cusack.

At the very least, the producers of 'Smash' had plenty of warning and were able to wrap up the series as best they could.
