Xbox One will not function without Kinect connected

More to follow...

And considering that Kinect is integrated and included, this is news?

It's not like XB360 (for which Kinect is an option) or PS3 (for which Move is an even pricier option).

Quibble, quibble, quibble.

This just in Wii doesn't work right if sensor bar not attached, can't track controller...... more to follow....... *rolls eyes* shouldn't this be common sense seeing how integrated it is to the OS now?

The Wii NEEDS the motion controller to play games/navigate OS. The Xbox uses a standard controller which can also navigate the OS.

If you have no interest in Kinect you've got a large camera to put somewhere.

MS might think different then you, they want the OS to NEED Kinect, they want it to be the primary interaction method

But if they don't MAKE it need Kinect, and the controller works, then that is not the same as the Wii and again I say people will have to put a camera somewhere if they do not want to use Kinect.

There's a difference between wanting to need something, and actually needing it. On the Wii you have to use the sensor bar, on the Xbox One MS WANTS you to use Kinect, and if you don't WANT to, tough, it's staying plugged in because ?

wow. don't buy it then?

I don't want friends watching me play games, should I start complaining about PS4 now?

Was the Kinect really that popular? People used them for a while until the novelty wore off and now they are all gathering dust.

You know all "People"? I for one don't use Kinect daily, but it's a well used device when I've got friends round, and also at Christmas. Kinect Sports Party Mode is always a good laugh.

Wii Sensor Bar does not have a camera, microphone, and the ability to track and count the people in the room, or see facial expressions.

Wii Sensor Bar = 4 Infraid LED's, you can even use four candles, but don't try this, kid burned there house this way.

What happens if your Kinect breaks btw? If you are tucking it "away" somewhere, aka, hanging it off the back of your TV/Unit. That isn't exactly the safest.

You get to buy a new one :)

Of course not, just the cool ones. :p

As you just said, you just use it on occasion. It's more of a novelty right now because there really aren't that many games or good uses for it. Maybe the new XBox will change that but I don't think anything will ever replace a standard controller.

If Kinect is needed to work but not a mandatory controller, won't be comfortable with that, but can live with it. If its a mandatory controller, then that's a deal breaker, will not be getting this console

Can't see this as being a 'good thing'.

I read that the X1 can be powered on by a voice command, so in theory that means it's powered on and listening all the time.

I'll let you pull out the tin foil hats on that one...

I'm already getting my tinfoil hat ready.. lol

But in all seriousness, I don't like this :(

My only concern about this is the room size required to make use of it.

With the 'old' Kinect you need a massive empty space with no clutter. I don't have that luxury. :p

The new one has a wider field of view and so it works closer as well, there's a video out there that shows this and other stuff so I'd say it will work in bigger and smaller rooms.

    • I gave up on browser ad-blocking extensions a few years ago, replaced them with Adguard. Not perfect but overhaul is a nice app that does the job on both Windows and Android with the respective versions.

When they kill that we get to watch Firefox and Brave get a boost in user market share.
    • Block by DNS ad blocker! I dare you! I will even layer unlock Origin, on top of my internal DNS, if I need to and I don’t even block ads today (I really should but this type of behavior makes me angry). I suppose I could also just be lazy, and add the flags myself, back to each release (it wouldn’t be that difficult).
    • Wonder what MPs have ties to these privacy/verification/data harvesting companies that are going to step in this time. Last time under the Tories half the cabinet had fingers in the pies, heck even the PM and his wife at the time was working for silicon valley, probably made a fortune.
