jackwanders
Well, I've never before played an MMORPG, mostly because paying monthly fees seemed a bit too much to ask. $120 a year to play a game online w/ other people? But FFXI has really caught my attention. I've been a faithful fan of the series from the get-go, but I told myself I would have to stay away from FFXI, for the reason stated above....but I'm starting to lean the other way now. I really only play any given game for a few months, so 40-50 bucks in monthly fees ain't so bad...IF it's a really good game. So...with that said, is FFXI worth the money? As an MMORPG, how does it rate? As a FF game, how does it stand up? Is there any way to test it out for free (demo or something) before laying my money on the proverbial table? Thanks for any info. sin-ergy
I was in the beta test and unless you're a huge FF fan I wouldn't bother with this. It's not really doing anything new that hasn't been done before. Just another MMORPG set in the FF world.
dougkinzinger
Not IMO. I'm the biggest FF freak there is -- just try me -- and I'm not even buying it. A) Monthly fee. B) No single player mode. C) MMORPG. So, that's just for me. For those online gaming fans, then yes, it's awesome for them.

C) MMORPG. So, that's just for me. For those online gaming fans, then yes, it's awesome for them. OK now lets think about this for a minute. How much do you spend on a movie? $8.75 a tick? Plus popcorn and a soda. That comes out to around $18 total for me. Now how long are you entertained at a movie? 3 hours at the most? So you pay about $6 an hour for entertainment at BEST. In a MMO you pay a flat rate, with the most expensive fee at $15 a MONTH. In an average week of gaming for a casual gamer in a MMO youll get about 15 hrs of play. Much more if you power game. If you haver 15hrs a week, 4 weeks in a month, you get about 60 hrs in a month. Your paying about $0.25 an hour for entertainment in a MMO. Not to mention youll lose intrest in purchasing new games while your playing your MMO. They really arent that expensive if you compare you entertainment time to other entertaining activities that you pay for.

Thats the way I usually think about my gaming habits as I happen to still play one MMORPG after over 4 years (yeah, wow). I think the price shouldn't ever be a problem as I rip my friends off for more than that all the time (on accident, I swear). $10/mo is chump change and if you wanted to make that up just go wash someone's car on a nice weekend day ;) I'll stick with my games. Balder
If you have a lot of friends that will play FFXI with you, it might be interesting. If you are the solo type, you'll get very bored with the game. I was very disappointed. At least Square was nice enough to provide me with a 30 day free trial to decide this game is not for me. Oh well, at least I have KOTOR for the PC and FFX2 on the PS2 to hold me over for the next couple months.

They really arent that expensive if you compare you entertainment time to other entertaining activities that you pay for. But the point is that its a monthly fee - you pay regardless of how much time you've spent on it. All those other activities you mention, they're one off things. You pay once, and its over with. If you're hard up for cash, you can choose not to partake in them - there are many other free things around ( libraries, going for walks ... ) Compare it to a normal, decently long-lived game, say Quake 3 or Half-life. Cost me around $45 each over here, but both have given me over 100+ hours of gameplay each, and are still going strong... Diablo 2? Warcraft 3? Morrowind? Neverwinter? Way more value for money... And not to mention the fact that MMORPGs require heavy investments in time. You stop playing for some time, you drop behind. Not so for these games.. OR i could pay $10 per month for a single game on my PC or ps2. not only that, i have to spend another $40 to get the network adapter if i use my ps2. hmmm... which do you think i'm going to choose? :shifty: to say the least, i'm not planning on getting any ps2 online games. ever. i'll still buy online pc games, but only if there is no online fee. and before you start saying i just play xbox games / love my xbox (i do; oh, i do :D), i have more PC games than xbox games. and if that weren't enough, i'm not getting ff11 for the same reasons dougkinzinger said :p
BxBoy
It's like the Sims Online, it's only worth it if 1) you have the money 2) can devote some serious time to this game.

You cant compare really, you play your xbox game online, then you quit and thats the end of it, yeah ok your scores might be saved but once you switch it off thats it, gone.
