Homeland's second season might not have lived up to the expectations set by its first, but it was still plenty shocking. The season 2 finale, for example, featured a jaw-dropping twist as Brody (Damian Lewis) was blamed for an unexpected bombing which killed several major characters and left the nation reeling. But with Abu Nazir -- the terrorist mastermind who was apparently responsible -- dead, where does the series go from here?

As it turns out, it gets a bigger scale. At least, that's what Alex Gansa, one of Homeland's showrunners, revealed on "This Week with George Stephanopoulous." It looks like one country was backing Abu Nazir, causing an entirely new set of problems for the already shaken C.I.A.

"The issue in this season is, what happens if it were learned that a major attack on the United States was sponsored by a state? These are the big concerns that we're going to deal with in the first sweep of episodes," Gansa said. It's a terrifying prospect that Saul (Mandy Patinkin) will likely have to deal with in season 3.

As for Carrie (Claire Danes), her concern is of course with clearing Brody's name. "And then there's the big question about where Brody is," Gansa continued. "Does anybody know that Carrie helped him get out of the country? And will they ever see each other again?"

We're gonna bet a solid 'yes' on that last question, but the rest of season 3 is wide open. Where will the series go from here? This kind of uncertainty is actually kind of exciting.

Homeland season 3 premieres Sunday, September 29 at 9/8c.

Apparently Tracy Letts makes an excellent first impression.

After recently signing on for a recurring role in the third season of Showtime's acclaimed drama 'Homeland,' it has just been announced that Letts has been upped from a recurring guest star to a series regular on the program. That didn't take very long.

The Tony- and Pulitzer-winning actor-playwright has been spending more time on stage than on screen over the past five years and this role on 'Homeland' is sure to skyrocket him into the spotlight. As any television fan knows, 'Homeland' has been cleaning up at awards shows, from the Emmy Awards to the Golden Globes; the third season is one of the most anticipated on television.

Letts has made guest appearances on 'Seinfeld,' 'The Drew Carey Show' and 'Prison Break.' On 'Homeland,' Letts will play the role of Senator Andrew Lockhart, the powerful, authoritative, and commanding Committee Chairman asking tough questions as the government?s investigation begins in the wake of the horrific terror attack that decimated the U.S. intelligence apparatus, and prompted a global manhunt for the world?s most wanted terrorist ? Nicholas Brody (Damian Lewis).

Letts is so far the only new series regular added to the 'Homeland' cast for season three, however the series also recently promoted F. Murray Abraham and Sarita Choudhury to regular. The third season of 'Homeland' is slated to premiere in September on Showtime.
