Allergic to my Wife's Dog - Air purifier?

Recommended Posts

I have been living with my Wife for about three years now and it is a pretty known fact that I am pretty allergic to her dog. It is a puggle which sheds a good bit.

We moved into our new house last June, and I have just been "putting up with it" but.. we went on Vacation and we had to board our dogs. We couldn't get the dogs back until two days after we came back..

As soon as I walk into my house, it smells "new" again and I can breath.. I had no allergy issues and felt good.

Now that dogs are back, the fresh air in the house is gone and the stuffy head along with the headaches are in full swing...

I can't take it anymore.. I have been battling this damn dog and my wife doesn't seem to really care.. when I talk to her about it she seems concerned but never acts on anything she says.. (A part from this, she is fantastic and always goes out her way to make people happy.. not sure what it is with this damn dog)

Well, it has to get better..

After some research, it seems that this is quite common and they make air purifiers to help with this.. There are many different kinds and sizes.. Does anyone have any experience with these that can help me out?

Well what about meds? Doesn't those help like Claritin and all those?

An air filter might help or if you can restrict the dog to certain areas of the house so you can have a "clean room" to yourself then that might help as well. You can stick the air filter in that room and you can hang there (even if it'll feel like a prison after some time) when you need to clear your head.

I know people get attached to their pets sometimes but shouldn't come before your health and happiness.

Thats quite selfish considering its affecting your HEALTH...

Claritin doesn't really do much, the Claritin-D and other meds with a decongestant work well.. but I have a hardtime taking those with my heart.. lol

I have the downstairs to myself and it is pretty clean.. The "dogs room" is in the back of the house, but have to walk through the living room to go outside.. They don't spend too much time inside unless they are in their room. I really miss that "fresh air" in the house when the dogs are away..

I wish we could get rid of the dog.. but I don't think that would be good option.. If I really really wanted the dog gone.. she would give it up.. but I wouldn't want her to hold it against me or resent me for it.

The things we do for our women eh? Mine has always been pushy about the subject of a dog and I told her, as she can have one as long as she signs the contract that says I NEVER EVER have to get up at 5am and NEVER in the winter to walk the dog. :p With the way she loves her sleep and hates the cold, she hasn't gotten it yet. (Y)

I hear ya though, maybe Zyrtec can help in that case then or same issue as Claritin-D?

I will look into Zertec.. If you get a dog, make sure you only get one... Having two dogs in a pain the ass.. HUGE pain the pass. Wanna go somewhere? Double boarding fee.. If you had one dog it would be easier to find someone to watch it or cheaper to board.. No want wants to watch two dogs..

If you are able to get a fence.. I highly recommend the investment.. We didn't have one at our old house and it was a pain in the ass taking the dogs outside..

When she does get a dog.. she will provide for it every second for about 2 months :p then it is a shared responsibility and it will end up being something you did not sign up for lol.. That is just my experience though.. Hopefully it will work out better than mine :D

I say this humorously as a happily married man whose wife drives him crazy sometimes.....but have you considered a new wife?

:p She is wonderful and is a very selfless person.. but when it comes to her dog.. nobody wins lol

Simple answer... go see an Allergist. They can prescribe things that are heart healthy for you. I know because I was in the same boat last year. Best doctor visit I've ever had. I was right as rain about 36 hours after coming home and haven't looked back.

No air purifier is going to help. no matter how many promises the manufacturer makes that their magic ionizing pixie dust air purifier can magically remove all pollen and allergens from the air. It's just not going to work.

You might get something to work if you get one of those giant air purifier systems with HEPA filters and such that you mount in the house generally when building, as they're massive units you place on the loft.

next best would be a powerful heat pump/air conditioner with a plasma filter. It might help a bit, but it's not going to be able to fully clean the air.

honestly the only thing that's going to help, is getting rid of the dog. My GF had to give up her baby kitten because over the 3 weekends I came over I gradually got worse and didn't get fully good again until the next weekend again, by the second weekend I had blood taste in my mouth. Now we got her a great Pyrenees instead :) At some point she has to decide is she loves you or the dog more, the dog makes you sick, and no amount of gizmos will change that.

I would suggest you look into treatment and if you can get rid of the allergy by the new treatment where they over several weeks/months, give you shots with the allergen gradually making your body accept it.

Hypnotherapy is a better solution for allergies.

so is magic pixie dust.
