Nathan Fillion shoots down 'Firefly'/"Serenity" sequel

It appears that Firefly is really gone.

Nathan Fillion, one of the stars of that program, has shot down the chances for either a continuation of the universe on either the big screen or small one. There was a lot of buzz after the successful Veronica Mars Kickstarter campaign that Joss Whedon might take Firefly that route, but Fillion seems to think the ship has sailed.

"That was a project that lived for so short a time and such a long time ago that I would look at that as an impossibility," he said. "Joss Whedon made a movie of it, something I also considered an impossibility, so I look at that and say 'where is the hope?' but knowing Joss Whedon, I try not to underestimate that man."

Don't confuse his feelings as his not wanting another crack at it.

"We talk about it, we dream about it. I don't think you could find a cast member, a writer, a director, any of the crew who'd say, 'No, I'm out,'" he said in February. "People are pretty busy right now, Alan [Tudyk] is always working, and obviously Joss is pretty busy. But that would be something that I would do again in a heartbeat. There's something about 'Firefly' -- it was my first love. So if you get a chance to go back to your very first love, you'll do it, right?"

While some fans hoped that Netflix would step in to finance it like it did for Arrested Development, Netflix chief Ted Sarandos shot that down.

"In almost every case the cult around the show gets more intense and smaller as time goes by. 'Arrested Development' was the rarest of birds in that the audience of the show grew larger than the original broadcast audience because people came to discover it years after it was cancelled. The 'Firefly' fan is still the 'Firefly' fan from when it was on TV and there?s fewer of them and they?re more passionate every year. Whereas with 'Arrested Development' we?re going to be serving a multiple of the original audience. Any of the other shows we could bring back would be a fraction of the original audience," he said.

I disagree with the premise that firefly is any different that AR other than being a contemporary comedy, AR appeals to a wider audience. But I didn't watch firefly at the time of its original broadcast I only went back and discovered its awesomeness in recent times so I don't necessarily agree that the fan base is shrinking.

The fanbase is still very large for this franchise but I think we will always just have the novels, series and film and no more

Either my brain is running slow today or I've missed something; What's AR?

Reading throught that it does not sound like he is shooting it down as an offer it sounds like he thinks that it would never get off the ground. sounds like it is just a deceptive article.

He just lost me as a fan.

So Nathan isn't allowed to be realistic about the never-going-to-happen project.

Ok.

sometimes I wounder if people are even aware of the actual fanbase and viewer count. These actors/studios should go on forums and sites and see how that's there is alot of people that want shows back.

enough oh these reality shows

personally I don't like arrested development, show is below my brain function...

Your problem and not his. He won't care that you have misinterpreted his dose of reality for a lack of desire.

To be fair, reading through the article he says that he would love for it to happen, he just doesn't think that it's realistically possible. I think after this much time he may be right, which I consider to be a shame but I'll survive.

too much time?

TV Guide ranked it #5 on their 2013 list of 60 shows that were "Cancelled Too Soon"

tv stations still do firefly marathons

But how do the viewing figures for each marathon compare over time against the viewing figures for the original air date? Let's not fool ourselves here, it's the viewing figures that would be the biggest indicator of a revival as far as the TV companies go.

I think what he said was true. I don't see it happening for a long time, if ever. However, I for one haven't given up hope. I'd even take Firefly the Early Years with a different cast.

Id have to disagree it was in my thoughts a mediocre series which was way surpassed by the likes of Babylon 5 and any one of the Star Trek follow up series such as Star Trek Enterprise lead by Scott Bakula of Quantum Leap fame .As to will it make a come back that would be up to persuading the money backers to fund a new series which is hard to see given the cost of CG special effects and the time scale since last production.

Any lead actor worth their salt would be a fool not to hope a program they starred in would make another series and on that note Im glad The Americans is getting a new series in 2014.
