Earlier this week, Showtime officially opted to let go of its papal period drama ?The Borgias,? but the premium cable network isn?t through with the long-running Edie Falco starrer ?Nurse Jackie? just yet. The drug-addled nursing dramedy will return for a sixth season, while the Emmy-winning series currently builds toward its fifth season finale.

??Nurse Jackie? is an essential part of the Showtime brand, and we are thrilled with the series? growth in its fifth season,? said Showtime president David Nevins of the renewal. ?Under the new leadership of Clyde Phillips, and with an amazing cast led by Edie Falco, this show is as sharp and compelling and entertaining as ever. I?m excited to get to see the next chapter in Jackie?s life.?

Previous show-runners Linda Wallem and Liz Brixius had stepped down in order to helm the rebooted ?Up All Night? (and look how well that went), leaving former ?Dexter? show-runner Clyde Phillips to take over beginning with season 5. ?Nurse Jackie? currently averages 3.1 million weekly viewers across various platforms, a full 10% up from the fourth season average.
