kenterlogic
So here are the stats, it is in the mail (or at least on an assembly line somewheres). Intel Pentium 4 at 3GHz w/800MHz front side bus & Hyper-Threading 2048MB of DDR SDRAM at 400MHz 80GB Ultra ATA/100 Hard Drive Windows XP Home 128MB DDR ATi RADEON 9800 Pro with TV-Out and DVI Sound Blaster Audigy 2 16x DVD-ROM Drive 48/24/48x CD-RW Drive and don't forget the lovely 470 watt power supply that is located in the bottom of the case, in a seperate compartment **cough**G5**cough** to prevent overheating. Not that would be a problem, 5 fans cool the case. Perhaps you should take advantage of Dells deal this week on XPS, 2GB of memory for the price of 512. isus
dell copies everything apple does (the psu in a different compartment). and apparently so do the people who use them (copying the "i got a mac" threads) you should have built it yourself. save money, overclocking, more fun in general. RadishTM Veteran Posted November 14, 2003 Veteran Share Posted November 14, 2003 yeah dude, you should of built your own.or go for alien ware. But he didn't build his own PC - he took the deal that Dell was offering  .... Oh and Alienware is ridiculously expensive ;) .... Radish? Dejon
the deal was just on memory, everything else must of been pricey knowing dell. that's why i said he should of tried building his own. i made a mistake and bought a dell before, and the price was ridiculously higher, than if i built my own pc with the same parts they used. kenterlogic
All of your questions answered: After the $150 rebate and a $25 affiliate coupon code that I stumbled upon, the entire system was only $1845 shipped to me. The power supply is on the bottom for a reason. And yes, it is true that heat rises but here is how it breaks down (i think). First, the partition between the main case compartment and the psu is a poor thermal conductor which means that heat will not go through it all that well. Second, the long narrow strip that the power supply is (rather than a big clunky box) allows for better heat dispursion and for fans that pump air straight through the case over it and out. Finally, the bottom of the case is made of, yep you guessed it, brushed metal (titanium?) which is an excellent thermal conductor which will jsut suck the heat into the floor. I didn't build it because, while I do have the experience, it just wasn't what I was going for. First of all, I simply wouldn't be able to build a system with such good engineering and construction. The PSU in the bottom is very important. The case is just too cool for me to pass up. Dell supplies customer support, so if somethign goes wrong you're set whereas if you build the system yoruself and something goes wrong your fizucked. And finally, I looked into a similar system that I could build myself with the same (or equivelant) parts and it ended up being only $100-150 less. Ide rather have all of the extras and the security. I stayed away from Alienware because they're expensive (but not much more) but more importantly because of the following list. Now, don't get me wrong- Alienware kicks ass. It just wasn't right for me. - They are loud mother f**ers. My box is right near my bed and tv, it would get distracting. - The cases, while they are cool, just don't look STRONG. I don't know how to explain this reasoning but the XPS case just looks liek it is ready to kick the hell out of the Mongolian horde. (Interesting fact, there is a 1 in 200 chance that you are directly related to Genghiz Khan who had an estimately 310 children.) - Dell has some nice goodies that come with the system. - My best friends Alienware burned out with the AlienIce coolign and all. - Benchmarks show that the XPS is slightly faster than an equally equiped Area-51 (go figure?) That should sum it all up. Peace. Oh wait, there is the rather interesting story of how I managed to afford it as a 16 year old with no job and no credit. Just 10 days ago I promiced myself I would have a new computer by April. I set out to do that with my $103 in my wallet and no job. I quickly found a buyer for my current system at $500. I looked at damn near every vendor except CyberPower Inc (I bought from them once and it was just a disaster) to find exactly what I wanted and needed. I worked out the logistics of financing and all that good stuff and Dell had a nice %9 APR which I liked. I did a quick poll around my school to see who would be interested in buying pop3 mail account with webmail access from me and my website for $10/year. That brought in some major doers. I signed up with google ads for my website which, with my usual hit count should bring in about $75/month. Then I started working for a local nut selling stuff on eBay for a salary for $100/month with maybe 30 minutes of work per week. I put my 500 for the computer, 103 cash down on the system. Got the 150 rebate. Managed to get my mom, dad, grandfather and step-mom to contribute 150 each and then I would pay the monthly bill myself until it was payed off. It looks like it will be paid for in full before interest even happens next June. Peace.
nekrosoft13
Oh and Alienware is ridiculously expensiv;);) ....Radish? it might be expensive but its better then dell, and easier to upgrade with XPS you can't change the motherboard in future. that just BS. speaking of alienware i don't like that company either, because of theirs lies, they don't optimize anything, and they claim that they do, my friend got a alienware pc, and they installed bunch of **** on it. if you wanna get a high quality pc, go with voodoo pc, if i would have allot of money i would defiantly get one. kenterlogic
oh, btw I JUST GOT A MAC! Powerbook 15'', its pretty sweet but it cant run HalfLife 2 so I think im going to put it in the recycler. and yes you CAN change the motherboard in the future. Its a bit of a task, but honestly-- its realy only a 1 shot deal with them. Its not like opening up your case to check a fan.
lostspyder
Its a nice computer, but one ccould build a considerably faster computer for the same price.
coats
yeah doesn't heat rise? I guess, in ATX cases, the PSU is right by the CPU, so maybe it gets generally hotter int he vicinity, placing it downward reduces that? I dunno.
