DsnBehind
my friend got a alienware pc, and they installed bunch of **** on it. That's why you never use the original OEM operating system. Just goes to show you; if you put your mind to it you can have anything you want. I really want a talking monkey. CrimsonBlur
dell copies everything apple does (the psu in a different compartment).and apparently so do the people who use them (copying the "i got a mac" threads) you should have built it yourself. save money, overclocking, more fun in general. Dude, you bitch at EVERYONE who says the bought a Dell! I got a Dimension 8300, almost the same specs as his XPS, and you and a few other people just tried to hack me down saying it was a stupid purchase, blah, blah, blah. Shut up! Be happy for him! He got an awesome new system, and it kicks ass! For the love of God you people can be pathetic sometimes! So anyway, nice purchase man, looks like a great system. When I got mine last week I got the free CD burner upgrade, free double RAM and a free all-in-one Dell printer :D THat's a sweet deal on the RAM you got there though! And now we can get back to the expected flamers making fun of us for no good reason

jackwanders
gotta love dem flamers! dell flamers, apple flamers, MS flamers, etc etc. They provide us w/ hours of entertainment here at Neowin. Seriously though, I'd be interested to see how much it would cost to put together the system yourself. It's 2:34, so I don't feel like going over to newegg.com now, but I may do it tomorrow, just to see. PS - Just checked out the XPS for the first time on Dell's site. I must say, you can put together one hell of a PC. 3700 bucks, but one hell of a PC...

jackwanders
prices for new computers and parts are high as ever. Huh? Maybe for the highest of the high end stuff, but I spec'd out a web server for myself (all new parts from newegg.com) for about 300 bucks. I also priced a new PC for a buddy of mine (decent machine...good enough for todays games) at around $560 or so. Prices are high as ever? Doubtful. Joel
dell copies everything apple does (the psu in a different compartment).and apparently so do the people who use them (copying the "i got a mac" threads) 1- Is the separate compartment thing new for Apple (I'm really asking)? The XPS is based on the Precision 650 Workstation that Dell sells, which has been out for a while. 2- If a Mac user can post about their new computer, why can't everyone else? Seems a little elitest to me.
~Bull}{Dog~
I thought the whole idea about buying a Mac was for the elitism  And yeah.. Cases with a sperate PSU compartment have been around for a long time now, its not a Dell thing cause they dont make any of the standards, they just repackage em, stick the Dell logo on the front and make money. Same with any OEM though. That said, its a nice looking system. I would have it, just not the Dell part :) enjoy your new machine.
MxxCon
$1845 470 watt PSU  overpriced overkill you don't need such big PSU. your cpu is <100watt, your video card is <100watt, rest of your devices <60watt. 250watt quality psu would do just fine. it would be cheaper to buy, cheaper to run, quieter, less heat i think Dell PowerEdge 400SC is a much better deal Celeron 2Ghz PowerEdge 400SC server is available for $274 after $100 rebate+free shipping. it has AGP8x, RAID SATA, standard ATX PSU, etc etc etc. upgrade this puter with same components you got and you'll save yourself at least $1000

Steven
So here are the stats, it is in the mail (or at least on an assembly line somewheres).Intel Pentium 4 at 3GHz w/800MHz front side bus & Hyper-Threading 2048MB of DDR SDRAM at 400MHz 80GB Ultra ATA/100 Hard Drive Windows XP Home 128MB DDR ATi RADEON 9800 Pro with TV-Out and DVI Sound Blaster Audigy 2 16x DVD-ROM Drive 48/24/48x CD-RW Drive and don't forget the lovely 470 watt power supply that is located in the bottom of the case, in a seperate compartment **cough**G5**cough** to prevent overheating. Not that would be a problem, 5 fans cool the case. Perhaps you should take advantage of Dells deal this week on XPS, 2GB of memory for the price of 512. All that.. but XP Home Edition? Why not Pro?!

Malechai Veteran Posted November 14, 2003 Veteran Share Posted November 14, 2003 Dell Dimension XPS review @ Anandtech pretty damn good if you ask me! it goes against other top of the line parts and the results are win some, lose some. congrats on your purchase! also, i don't get why people start bringing up money. the same happens in threads about people purchasing Mac's. its not like hes spending your money or anything.. he's entitled to do as he pleases

Why innovate if you can copy other ideas and build on it and have a higher profit margin??
Nexus-
Dell supplies customer support, so if somethign goes wrong you're set once the best customer support and now its more like toilet support :pinch: They have really when downhill.whereas if you build the system yoruself and something goes wrong your fizucked Not true! I hate all the people that say ied rather buy my computer from a company that have you build me one since ill be getting a warrenty (i know you didnt say this i just get it alot around here :p ) you get a warrenty on each part you buy some times (like for sticks of ram) you can get a lifetime warrenty from the big names trey getting dell to give you a life time warrenty on anything you just got! Oh and all the people are right OEM bioses DO NOT overclock. SO have fun not getting anything more out of it that what you paid for (and the xps is supposed to be a gaming machine? lol) The reason is straight forward they dont want you to get anymore power from it that you paid for  oh and to the guy who said you cant change the mobo usually you can but this invovles moding the case like cutting off the standoffs on the inside of the case and securing new standoffs to the inside of the case or something more or less than that  the reason i would not buy a dell is becuse for a company who for the majority of their life has made consumer and bussiness machines and has only done this niche market for a short time as compaired to other players (like voodoo and abs and the countless others that are advert. in magazines) they have been doing gaming machines all of their life and they dont make computers for any other market so i would trust them to build a soild machine all around! oh and good work on the memory deal ! and remeber your computer is the prefered machine for half life 2!

If all those things happen to start up at the same time it can draw more power then the psu can output. In those cases your system will lock up and it could damage something. The gfx card isn't the only thing that draws power; your cpu, hard drives, and everything else such as fans, cd-roms, cold cathodes, etc. all add up. One of the neowin mods recently had to replace his 350 watt psu because it wasn't enough for his 4 hard drives and 9800 Pro. As for the server. A 2.0 ghz celeron will not compare in performance to that of a 3.0C ghz P4. I didn't say the level of support had anything to do with it. Bottom line is it's better to have a psu that outputs more power then you need then to have one that could be less then desirable in the future if you plan on upgrading (or adding) new components. Besides, it's not like a 400 watt psu costs $100 more then a 250 watt. The prices are insignificant. Edited November 14, 2003 by ANova

adamp2p
The XPS should be a stable system that you could appreciate over about a year. What you see in my signature is what I got...except I went a cheaper route altogether--I bought an 8300 with a 3.0 GHz 87P ddr 400 config almost 6 months ago from the "dell outlet" for only $900. I sold my old 8200 to my dad for $500. I bought my memory aftermarket because it is cheaper that way, but when I upgraded the PSU when I upgraded my vid card, I had to use a PC power and cooling to ensure compatbility. I spend under $2000 US for my sig... :woot:
