After a difficult first season that saw it struggle to gain any momentum in the ratings, Jean Reno's detective series 'Jo' has been canceled by French network TF1.

This was Reno's first attempt at a starring role in a television series. He played Detective Joachim "Jo" Saint-Clair, who used his knowledge of Paris to help him solve difficult crimes. Jo's struggles in his personal life - with drinking, drugs and a difficult relationship with his daughter Ad?le - helped explain why he threw himself into his work so heavily.

TF1 heavily promoted the series at the MIPTV Media Market in April, but it appears those efforts went to waste. The show averaged only 6.1 million viewers after starting at 7.5 million for the premiere. The last episode that aired fell to a new series low of 5.3 million viewers, which was roughly 25 percent of the viewing audience.

For other series those numbers may have been enough to survive, but Jo was very expensive to produce, as it cost ?2 million (which is more than $2.5 million) an episode.

Producers of the show hoped that viewers would come to see it as a "mini-DaVinci Code," given its use of historical places and neighborhoods. They tried to create a strong international viewer base for the program by casting well-known actors such as Tom Austen (The Borgias) and Jill Hennessy (Crossing Jordan) in the cast of the English-language program, but something obviously did not connect like they hoped.

Eight episodes were filmed of the show, with each one averaging about 45 minutes in length.

In addition to TF1, the show also aired on RTBF in Belgium, Sat 1 in Germany, RTS in Switzerland, ORF in Australia and had just debuted in the United Kingdom on FOX UK.
