Home robbery and theft

Recommended Posts

So I just got a phone call from my sister telling me that their home was broken into. They live in a rural area in which I guess crime could happen easily without many witnesses. The basically busted down the front door and stole her husbands computer, 40" lcd tv, a galaxy tab 2 7", money, passport, and a old cellphone (not a smartphone). Luckily, they didn't steal my sisters macbook pro, asus n66u wireless router because they were hidden away. What they did was basically pull a truck up (due to the tire impression left in the wet ground) to the door and started hauling stuff into it. The police were by and took statements and tried to get fingerprints. Sickens me cause they have 6 cats in the house hold and were afraid that they may have run away or have been harmed. Though, I am glad my sister didn't stay at home cause I would worry if something worse were to happen.

So Tomorrow I'm going to go check out pawn shops in the near area to see if they have received these goods. I have all the serial numbers for the stolen items so I will try to do some detective work just cause I would assume that if someone has acquired stolen items they would try to pawn it asap. I've also been checking craigslist and kijiji to see if those items have become listed. So wish me luck.

Also, My sister asked me to see what options there are for a wireless surveillance, any opinion on that?

Thanks guys.

Sorry to hear this :(

hope they catch the B*****ds and lock them up

You can get wireless webcam and cctv that will record when movement is sensed to a hard drive (NAS or such like)

They usually have there own little wireless access point which attached to your router

I would imagine thief's would stay away from pawn shops due to item being traceable back to them? CCTV and what not.. These type of people will have similar family and friends who would happily take the stolen goods at knock off prices.. the TV will be up on someones wall right now and you'll never see it again.. i have a friend who knew some 'shop lifters' they would steal anything possible and then just go knocking on doors of people they knew vulnerable to buy the stolen goods to offload them quick...

Yeah, I guess that this issue can happen where ever you are, just seemed like living in a rural area would get away from the grime and crime from the city. But I guess it doesn't matter where you are : (

Yeah I was looking into that sort of thing like there was a dlink wireless cctv camera, but maybe something that would of stored somewhere on the computer hidden in the household or in the cloud.

Sorry to hear this, I hope you're able to track down what was stolen :(

Thank you. Gonna give it a try to track it down. Though i do wish I had installed some app on my sister's husband android tablet that has the same functionality as the iphone/ipad/itouch in which you could lock it down and track it via gps. It was a galaxy tab 2 7".

While yes that it may be a possibility that they could sell it to some stranger door to door or to friends and family, I tend to think that they may try to pawn the goods before the pawn shops become wise. Like pawning an item before it gets reported. So that is going to be my mission tomorrow and taking a look around to see if I can find something, at least maybe get some hints. At least I will try to do something about it.

Also, I don't think androids come with a built in anti theft feature like the apple devices? Thanks

I have a couple of wireless cameras which store images based on motion to a NAS box hidden in the loft (which eventually uploads online) - just have to remember to switch them on before leaving ;)

If the tablet was a WiFi + 3G model, I think you could use the IMEI number to track it down in some way.

I've never dealt with this kind of stuff, so I don't know how one would go about doing this, but it's probably possible.

uh, thats horrible. Not alone the goods stolen but the thought of somebody uninvited been in ones home is what is also very annoying.

ive been lucky pretty much. Car has been broken into and the wifes car twice, but i live in dump filled with what we call "nackers" so it happens alot

I have 4 logitech alert cameras in my house/yard. They have built in night vision and work pretty well.

I have it set up to email me pictures if there is movement.
