Nidonocu
I have a major problem with Terminal Serivces, the service used to run User Switching, Remote Assistance and Incoming Network Connections. I was finding my self unable to do a user switch, no errors appeared, it would just snap back to the LogonUI after a second. Then I found I couldn't offer or recieve RA at a later date. Finally I tried to setup my machine to get incoming network connections and finally it reported that "Terminal Services were not running". I went to the Services in the MMC via the Adminstrator Tools Folder in the Control Panel and there I found that indeed they were not running, I opened it's properties and found out from it's description that it controlled the other areas which had failed, I clicked Start and after a moment it came up with the following error: Could not start Terminal Services on Local Computer Error 127: The specified procedure could not be found. If anyone can tell me how to fix this I would be most thankful.:D
JustinLerner
Before the failure, what else happened? Were any system, software changes made prior to these failures? Do multiple persons use the same PC? Is this a work PC or home PC? If work, contact your tech support, if home, why on earth do you need the Terminal Services service? Remote control of desktops is not that secure. Troubleshooting a failing service requires going to the Event Viewer and/or Services Manager. From either, look at the error codes, Required Dependencies and determine if a necessary preloading service is also not loading properly at boot and thus preventing the Terminal Services from loading. Then, go to the MS Knowledge Base and search for possible solutions with XP or 2000.
Nidonocu
No software changes were made, it's one of those things where computers just wake up and it happens. 4 users use the computer, but only I make any large system wide changes or do anything that could effect the system as a whole. They just type stuff or use the internet or games. This is a home PC but runs XP Pro RC1 (note that this error just occured for no reason and that the RC proberly has little to do with it since it's been running fine for 3 monthes prior). Secondly, Terminal Services like I said is needed for Multi-User logins, which in a family situation means I can go and watch the TV without my brother's games intrupting my website making. Second, I wanted to see if my friends could login and access my PC for some general exprimentation with xp's features, that requires TS also. Plus if I want to help my friends with their tech probs, I need TS to access their machines. And finally, TS is not depentent on anything, infact the reverse, the services listed above are dependent on it. 2000 doesn't have TS and I've used the Help and Support center's search (which includes the MSKB articles) and no help there. Please, does anyone know what I could try. :disappoin

JustinLerner
Unfortunately, I still say the best way to troubleshoot a failing service is to go to the EVENT VIEWER log and view the ERRORS and INFORMATION about events that may be related, the dependencies and order of errors. This gives YOU the clues as to what is causing the problems. Since I can't read your event log errors (application, security, system log), I can't tell what might be causing the Terminal Services errors. Although other services and drivers may be disabled or booting in different order, they may not be failing or may be turned off and may not indicate errors. For example maybe TS also needs the Run As Service and KSecdd driver, SAM, IP Security, etc. Once again, I can't see which drivers and services you have running or stopped, what order they boot/start in, and even then I don't know which drivers and services are required for TS. I can check on my Terminal Server (2000 Server), but I don't have TS running on XP RC1. Other clues. When did the problem first start? Search your computer for files, by date/time, for changes on the day(or 2) before the errors started until now. This helps you determine what changed to cause the problems. Many programs may not be compatible with TS, especially games. Some games will not even install properly and don't give errors or indications as to why they don't work. I suspect something similar is occuring in your case. Probably some setting or software is preventing your TS from working properly, maybe it's RC1, and maybe it's none of the above. Still, only you can troubleshoot startup and service errors. Then you can post information about the error codes, informational notices, dependencies, etc. Sorry, but I still disagree. Multiple user accounts are possible without TS. Although simultaneous multi-user logins are new to XP (and may be a buggy new feature), multiple user profiles and logins have been a part of NT4, 2000, 98/ME and now XP. The nice thing about NT4 and NT5 (2000/XP) is the way it manages user logins, the profiles, settings and permissions and security for individuals which can prevent others from accessing parts of the computer without appropriate security or permissions.
