Microsoft's hit Xbox 360 game Halo 4 is naturally a popular game for multiplayer gamers as well. Today, the company announced it was sponsoring a new Halo 4 tournament that will ultimately give $200,000 to the final winner of the competition. The tournament itself will have a total prize pool of $500,000.

The Xbox Wire website reveals the details of the Halo 4 Global Championship, which officially begins on Friday during the Rooster Teeth Expo in Austin, Texas. Online players will also start competing on Xbox Live on July 15th. The tournament will have players competing in free-for-all matches, with players moving up the ranks based on their average scores and elimination matches. The finals of the tournament will be held in Seattle on August 31st and September 1st, most likely as part of Microsoft's PAX Prime activities.

More information on the Halo 4 Global Championship, including the rules, schedule and how interested players can register to compete, can be found on the tournament's official website. Microsoft also announced today that Halo 4 was Microsoft Studios' best selling game ever in the US, although the company declined to give specific sales numbers for the game.
