roosevelt
Hi, I noticed a very odd thing in my family. I live in a family of 4 and I noticed I am the only one in the family who has issues. And by issues I mean I have a hard time accepting my current lifestyle. What I want to do is lead a better lifestyle and achieve a certain amount of success. But obviously that requires work and dedication from my part. However, the problem is I noticed I lack focus and persistence. It seems like the only thing I am persistent of is not being persistent. I would not say I give up but I definitely don't stick to my plan. For example, I plan on going to the gym after work today. But I don't have that certainity that I actually will go. Lack of confidence? I don't know... I manage to do a lot of things in my life and frankly I am way better off than my peers. So, what is missing here Neowinans? BTW... I am quite obessive according to certain someone :P
Nick H. Supervisor Posted July 9, 2013 Supervisor Share Posted July 9, 2013 I find that I need a reason to do things. For example, I was perfectly comfortable with how I looked, sporting a massive beard and long hair. Basically I was saying to the world, "I don't care how I look." Then a few weeks ago I met a girl, and now my beard is neatly trimmed, and my hair is back to a short look. All I needed was a reason to want to change. I've even suggested to her that I will join her at the gym at some point. I haven't been to the gym in years. But now I have a reason to go. Dedication is difficult. No one can force you to be dedicated to something, only you can do that. Try writing a list of changes that you want to make, as well as the reason for making them. If you feel yourself losing hope with an activity that you've started, refer to the note to remind yourself why you're doing the activity.
Rohdekill
Agree. All you need is a motive. Whether that be a photo, statistics, or any example to refer to as what could or will happen if you proceed down the current course.
roosevelt
So you are saying I have to constantly remind myself why I am doing what I am doing? Basically carry some kind of flashcards or a diary? Man... as a programmer, you do realize how much I hate reptition! arghhh!

Basically carry some kind of flashcards or a diary? Man... as a programmer, you do realize how much I hate reptition! arghhh! Not exactly. I'm saying that having a reason to do something is normally motivation to stick to what you're doing. If you don't want/need to write it down then you don't have to. I don't need to write down that I'm making some changes for someone. However, if you don't have something emotional as a reminder to keep you doing something, then I've heard that making notes is a good way to remind yourself. That's why we were supposed to take notes in school. ;)
cooky560 Veteran Posted July 14, 2013 Veteran Share Posted July 14, 2013 You need a reason and set of achievable steps to achieve said goal, if you have difficulty staying on task it might be an idea to set many small steps to keep you interested until the bigger picture occurs. For example when the goal is losing weight, I managed it without getting distracted by setting a weekly reduction target. It works much like mission objectives in games, the objectives are small, but at add up to completing the mission. The missions are small, but add up to ending a war. Set up a series of objectives that can be completed in a short time (as in the each objective would take a short time, it may still take a long time for the final goal to be met, depending on the number of steps and the difficulty of each step), but complement each other and lead to the life style you dream of building, then complete them.
