Dude you must be a hoot at parties ;)

Oh I sure hope you don't take that the wrong way -- not trying to hurt your feelings or anything.

You assume I go to parties and you assume I have feelings.  Either way neither of us are contributing to this thread, so I'm off.

Except there was no chance at a logical discussion in the first place, that's the whole point people have been trying to make.

There is no reasoned debate with the sort of people that think (for example) Islam can do no wrong in any circumstances, or that the government are using mind control beams on the general population.

These sort of people want one thing and one thing only, blind unwavering submission to their viewpoint. If you disagree you're either an infidel or a sheeple, and no matter what reasoned evidence to the contrary you may present, you're still an infisheeple.

Otherwise hey, where's the "Athernar is god and you are all his personal slaves" debate thread?

Then don't participate in the thread. It's as simple as that. If you can't discuss a topic without insulting someone, whether they're right, wrong or illogical then don't. And this thread is not the place to make your opinions of Islam known.

There is a bit of difference between saying a statement or opinion is moronic or idiotic vs calling the person directly a moron or idiot.

While calling someone names is never useful, calling an argument names doesn't achieve much more, and is often perceived to be just as offensive. Saying something like "That's a retarded statement" leads you no closer to refuting it. If anything it weakens your stance; why would you resort to such a low tactic if you were confident in your reasoning?

Agreed - I have tried my best to refrain from it.. But as I already stated, sometimes "blunt" is more effective and quicker way to get the point across.

Sometimes its knee jerk reaction to a statement, sometimes it's just "fun" - sometimes it the bourbon or the beer, sometimes it's boredom, sometimes it the teenager in you seeing what they can get away with, etc..

It is not fun being adult about every conversation you have - sometimes you just don't think about what your saying.

If people don't get that, then that is on them - you should not take everything said by some username on the net as a personal attack against you. While you can not call your boss a moron in the office, or yell at a user after they f'd up their machine for the nth teen time. There is rarely any sort of repercussion to calling billy on the net an idiot, other than allowing you to get it out of your system when you have had a frustrating day at the office, etc.

What can happen? Get a warning by the mods -- ooohh what will I do?? ;)

Some people need to lighten up around here that is for damn sure!!

I agree. While I VERY much also believe people are too sensitive these days, political correctness is out of control, and people need to toughen up and get some perspective... there's also just no need for some of the attitude that accompanies even helpful posts. You aren't Dr. House, you don't get to get away with being a jerk just because you also happen to know what you are talking about. You can say "that's not a good setup, here's why" without having to resort to insulting terms. There's just no need for it and it makes you look arrogant as hell. Also, it can intimidate people into not wanting to ask questions for fear of looking stupid, and that's definitely not the atmosphere we want to encourage here.

Agreed, but when someone expresses their opinion, more often than not they are called a troll when it is clear they are not trolling.  Some people really need to look up, and understand, the meaning of the word "Internet Troll"

I haven't figured it out yet.

quite possible - that would make it even sweeter ;) But he does not know who budman is.

BTW that was an example - my current boss is quite competent, and very good at what he does from a manager perspective as well as technical. <just in case> hehehehehe

Agreed it's time for people to put their big boy pants on and quit crying to the mods and admins every time they get a little butthurt because someone doesn't agree with them.

The rampant atheist fundamentalism and condescension towards religion on these forums is the entire reason for the existence of the "Religion Thread" which is just a damage control type of measure. It's simply impossible to discuss this topic with calm and moderation on these boards. This post is just another example of it.

Rampant atheism?  Oh dear. Does our non-believe bother you so? How dare atheists express their views! If you wish to counter atheists' views, no one is stopping you.

The existence of the official religion thread isn't at the behest of the atheists on this forum. It exists to discuss religion, by those for or against. If you want to discuss religion, how about instead of just rambling about "fundamentalist atheists" you go in there and offer something of substance? Or is it simply easier to whine about the fundamentalists atheists?

I'd me more than happy to have a respectful and honest discussion with you about this topic.

We're a tech site though, so making a political statement is quite a bit far of the mark here.

I'm not saying avatars can't be off topic, but maybe leave the political statements at the door OR in the forum section where it's contained?

Odd rationalisation given that from what I can see none of the people carrying pro gun stuff have been censored, so as per usual it's just heavy handed censorship aimed at targeting certain groups of people.

The official religion thread is a baby fence that was deemed necessary because of every topic pertaining to religion being invaded by angry atheist fundies reciting their flying spaghetti monster and pink unicorn mantras. Now instead of 12 threads of stupid there's only a single 300-page one.

I've paid it attention in the past, but eventually came to the conclusion that trying to have a constructive discussion there is pointless. It's just a garbage dump. I would like to have a constructive discussion about religion, but unfortunately Neowin is not the place for it.

RIP Real World Issues, May aswell go ahead and close the entire section because someone got their feeley weelys hurt.

People should be respected, beliefs should not be protected in the same way.

If someone gets their panties in a bunch because their conspiracy was debunked that's their problem, Trying to censor the people who debunked it is despicable.

I agree with you, in part.  As a member stated on this thread that beliefs such as racism shouldn't be respected along with other antagonistic belief systems.  At the same time, there are many other kinds of beliefs that are good.  In the same way the law intends to protect the good and innocent, while attempting to discouraging criminals, beliefs that we as a society believe to be "good" should be protected as well.

Be mindful that at the very heart of conflict is the spirit of intolerance.  Intolerance against evil is good, while intolerance against good is evil.

Just a thought.

There's lack of respect and then there's censorship for the sake of censorship. If the avatar that I had removed, for example, offended anybody then the only conclusion I can draw from that is that the world is full of a bunch of complete and utter crybabies

Sounds like name calling to me - How are we to have a constructive conversation if your just going to name call and make fun of statements made ;)

That's absolutely enough bickering and name-calling. I'll leave what's here to stay and will start handing out posting restrictions to those that can't wrap their heads around where they're posting this nonsense. If you don't like being treated like a child then please stop acting like one.

I'm afraid you must have missed my point. I'm not trying to refute anyone. I'm describing what the situation is in the RWI. Unless I'm mistaken the premise of the thread is that there's too much "immature" and "childish" going on there; me calling a set of threads "stupid" is not very different.

From what I've seen, if you read the posts of some of the religious members as well the stuff in the religion thread is pretty much ###### for tat.

We don't have any moderators recruited because of their fantastic contributions in RWI.

And you don't think that is part of the problem?  Sadly, Neowin can't stand on its own feet as a tech site.  It needs the other forums to keep people coming here.

I also don't understand that if we are supposed to respect all 'cultures' and points of view, how you can take racism or sexism or any other amount of isms off the table.  If I want to profess an unpopular point of view, I shouldn't have to worry about being censored because a random mod doesn't respect that difference of origin/opinion.

There are plenty of barbaric ideas that are expressed here everyday, but much like the current firing of a certain Southern cook, if you dare to use a 'no-no' word, you and your post are immediately branded with ZERO regard for context or devil's advocacy.

Half the comments in this thread are perfect examples of why RWI has issues.

Seems you don't get why people go there to begin with.  Mods should stick to their own comfort sections and stay out of ones they are biased towards.  If you approach RWI as if its kindercare and 'you' have to (pretend) be the adult, you only further encourage childishness with ham-handed moderation, bereft of content or experience.  Any ref who doesn't have a love and deep understanding of the game, shouldn't be on the court.

That's interesting Asik, as I remember having some pretty good discussion with you back when there were 12 threads instead of a single recycled one that one or two members can monopolize.  By lumping it all together, you simply dilute any possibility of an actual discussion with any amount of nuance. 'Superthreads' never result in intelligent discussion, but simple bomb throwing.

I could not agree more. I strongly believe the official religion thread should be abolished, that there should be some rule that pertains to post quality, and that members who troll every religion-related thread with the same arguments all the time should get post restrictions based on that rule.

The same would apply for the other "official" threads I guess.

Or simply reserve Official threads for less passionate discussions...give Religion its own subforum and give RWI a different set of rules, and hence, its own mods/MVPs.  Then your new announcement system actually has meaning.
