We Got a DOCK! Kinda...

OK, OS X if I am not mistaken (havent read specs or messed with it) is based on BSD *nix, correct? OK.....Now, someone out there should be able to go over their OS X source code and find the Genie Effect code. Then no matter wtf it looks like, copy that whole section and any other references it may have to it, pack it into a tarball, and send it to people who could make some use out of it. If possible, it may be portable to java , or better yet...what if the Genie Effect was written for OS X in java? ;x Oh well, call me crazy. I'm just shooting ideas, FLASH IS OUT OF THE POOL OF POSSIBILITIES SO GET OVER THAT...

Yeah... great Idea... i would love to see the source code of the original dock in OsX... it have to be somewhere, cos is based on Unix.... but i doubt it will be in Java... even if it would be really cool!

By the Way Dazzla... do you happen to know what's that dock in the picture you post? Is it windowsXp or the real MacOSX ?!?

No, I said find the source and all files inlcuded in the source. No matter what language it is in, it may be portable to VB & definitely portable to java...I never said it was java in the first place. But flash is simply lame and does it an assload of resources. Java would be the way to go. The flash will have too many complications and most people know a little about java and nothing about flash (especially scripting it). Yummy, taquitos!!!!

Not necessarily. The interface part of OS X is locked in the same manner as the Windows source code, so this would probably mean that there is no ripping from Apple's OS X. Even if you succeed, and if Apple were to find out about it, then they would get on your case.

Ok, the base OS level for Mac OS X is based on BSD. The distrobution for this is called Darwin and it is available freely from Apple ( http://www.opensource.apple.com/ ). Darwin will run on both Intel x86 box's as well as PowerPC machines. You just need to meet the requirements. I haven't played with the x86 distro, but i get the feeling the only window manager you get is xfree86 4.x.

Now my understanding is that inOS X there is a 3rd rendering layer in the OS that allows for that dockbar (and other wonderful things) to happen. All the effects and icons in OS X are vector based graphics which are handled by a 3rd generation rendering layer in the OS called Quartz. It is based off of the openPDF format or something like that ( http://www.arstechnica.com/reviews/1q00/ma...os-x-gui-1.html ). Check that link out, it's an extremely interesting read.

So what i'm getting at is, the whole OS X dockbar in windows could probably be done with some snazzy program in what ever language you want, but i doubt flash will cut it. To get the exact same effect under windows would require a vector based rendering layer, and i somehow doubt MS will do that for quite some time and if MS was to implement and 3rd generation rendering layer in Windows i'd assume it'd be Direct3D based.

If anyone does feel up to the task to programming such an application for Windows, i wish you the best of luck!

if you guys want anywhere near the same level of smoothness that OSX has, you're going to have to write a brand new spanking graphics layer for Darwin that has the functions of Quartz (vector-based, PDF capabilities). after that's done you can make your GUI shell.

but heres a thread that has some sort of one.. here

i downloaded, and it works somewhat, takes out taskbar, and shows that, right click makes it smaller, and there are many useless test images aside the the actual opened things which you can change, ladr

Running some of these files through Hexworkshop and unlocking them and cranking them up in Flash, but there is not much there. I must be missing some files from the "desktopprevs/" directory, but I don't know how to get them. Anyone have anything yet?
