Not that they weren't pretty excellent already, but some major BBC channels are due to get 1080p upgrades by early next year. UK viewers will get five new channels in total, with no need for any subscriptions (courtesy of Freeview HD, YouView and Freesat), including BBC News HD, BBC Three HD, BBC Four HD, CBeebies HD and CBBC HD (so long as Mr Tumble can fix his make-up). The programming will match the standard-def counterparts and contribute a promised 250 hours of extra HD content per week. There's also talk of broadcasting regional programs and variants in HD, although that proposal still has to be approved by the BBC Trust and could be a bit further off.

Oh snap, not having BBC3 HD on Freeview annoyed the hell out of me, would prefer Channel 5 HD but beggars can't be choosers.

Woo BBC3 HD will be good, so to fussed about 4 and CBBC, also nice to see OTA 1080p rather than 1080i

probably using the space that they are freeing up by not doing any 3D anymore  :/

Not as if the BBC did much 3D...Wimbledon Final and the Masters Final are the only 2 things I've seen advertised...

It's nothing but a gimmick anyway, a complete waste of money.

The press release says they are using existing spectrum for 2 of the channels and new spectrum for the others on Freeview HD.

I wonder if this is the end of the 7.5 min tinnitus acid-trip instead of some local news?  When I really need to know where Prince Charles has visited, or much lottery money it took to restore an old barn 50 miles away, they give me a dream about drowning under hippos instead!

Sounds good, the Quad DVB-T2 tuner in our HTPC will be getting extra use next year it appears!
