V-Tech
Ouya has just announced that it'll launch a second Kickstarter campaign in order to speed up the development pace of games for its nascent console. The gaming outfit will match any pledges between $50,000 and $250,000 from developers during the new campaign, and give $100,000 to whoever kicks in the most. The only caveat is that successful candidates will be required to make their games exclusively for the console during a six month window. Ouya had a huge initial success when it moved over 10,000 developer kits while raising $8.5 million in its initial Kickstarter drive. It also sold out of its initial run at stores, but the rush of a new console for those buyers will soon where off if they can't get games to play on it. http://www.engadget.com/2013/07/18/ouya-launches-fund-matching-kickstarter-project-for-games/
HawkMan
10 000 developers kits, the vast majority of which wasn't sold to developers isn't a huge success by any measure. It's barely a fraction of the pre orders for the next gen consoles. Heck in total it hasn't even outsold the Wii U.

If you think that an unknown company producing a <$100 console is going to successfully sell better than billion dollar companies like Microsoft, Nintendo and Sony, I think your expectations are unreasonable. Never said so. BUT it also isn't "successful" and that's what the reviews and user tests show to. it's a geek gimmick, it sold to geeks who wanted a cheap media player and box to play emu's on. but it's not selling as a games console. people would rather play games on their cell phones which had far better graphics capabilities when this released. unfortunately, as cool as these are, their business model and design to market time, it's not feasable. it doesn't provide anything people want or need. ahhell
Great business model. Let's get our customers to fund building our device, now lets get them to pay again to get some content developed for it. We can even charge them AGAIN when said content has been created. *high fives all around* :s
SlimShady
That's why they want to kickstart exclusive games. There's nothing wrong with that.
HawkMan
That's why they want to kickstart exclusive games. There's nothing wrong with that. Well the thing is, even if it's "unfair" that a little unknown startup should have to compete with billion dollar established companies. that's whatthey have to do. and as a dev you have a choice. get 50k or 100k to develop a game for a console that has a sub or just over 100k install base, the maoriyt of which don't play games on it and if they do it's downloaded roms on their emu's. OR develop with or without monetary help a game for a console that sells 25k+ a MONTH, to GAMERS, with millions of gamers who actively buy games on the consoles online solution... honestly, it's an easy answer. Honestly you'd have to be a idiot to sign a deal for a 6 month exclusive for Ouya.
