I would highly suggest looking into Gnome Fallback, ran it on an older netbook and it was pretty nice what distro are you running again? is it lubuntu?

Crunchbang? It uses openbox and it's fast as hell. It also uses Debian as a base so it runs pretty much anything you throw at it.

I used Crunchbang on my netbook. Before I sold it a few years ago :P

 

Openbox is super light.

Best choice I know for really light weight and yet feature complete.
