Luck vs. Hard-work - What makes a Man successful?

Recommended Posts

At least in my business, treat your customer right. Bend over backwards for them. Give them some free support for little things and don't refuse to repair their computer just because they are running XP.

depends on how you want to define success, really.  an elementary school teacher who loves their job/life and is loved by their staff/students is just as successful as a wall street banker who makes millions if they love their job/life as well.

i find that hardwork is quintessential when it comes to success and luck plays a role in the continuous persistence, mostly because with all the work/experience you become ready to seize the opportunity when it does arise, otherwise even if you get lucky, odds are that you'd screw up thereafter.

hope that made some sense, kinda past my coherent point right now.

You need both.  You obviously need to prove your worth by working hard, but you also need the "luck" of knowing the right people to help you get ahead.

Obviously having one or the other can work, but having both will work better.

I don't think luck plays into it much, you work hard, you go out and meet the right contacts, you improve your communication skills, you improve you job knowledge. Its all part of the work and it builds your career.

It's not what you know, it's who you know.

If you're smart and talented enough, you can make it, if you make the right connections. Other than that. Unless you're some huge breakout that doesn't need funding, it's who you know.

That's my lazy version of it at least.

I think a lot of people overlook the luck of being born into the right family in the right part of the world and the opportunities that brings.  Hard work is important but all the hard work in the world won't help you overcome a lot of the obstacles that many people are born facing.

Also, why does this only apply to men?

God I'm so tempted to make a sexist joke right now......

On topic, I think it's a factor of both, I work hard, and consider myself lucky to come home after word everyday

90% luck.

You think Bill Gates would be known by anyone if he had been born in a remote African village?

1% luck born here gave him the 99% opportunity to work hard.

If it was 90% luck then everyone who lives in the US should be wealthy.

I agree. I know people who have worked extremely hard but have never been what I considered successful. It seems to be really successful you need some of both.

Found this quote once. It's pretty accurate:

Hard Work Beats Talent (but Only If Talent Doesn?t Work Hard).

  • 3 weeks later...

There is no hard and fast answer to this question. Some people seem to live their entire lives lucky, others have to graft from the day they leave school.
