Blackhearted
Luck. All the hard work in the world wont do a thing for you if you're not lucky enough to have things play out just right.

dead.cell
Hard work, with a bit of luck. However, you can increase your luck by networking. Otherwise, if you don't talk about the things you can do, no one will ever know. I've had a few guys approach me regarding offers, just because I demonstrated my knowledge through typical conversation banter.
Gerowen
Initiative and hard work. Being a hard worker isn't enough. You can work your ass off for the rest of your life and retire and never be really "successful". You have to take initiative, think outside the box, recognize things that can be improved or fixed and do it without having to be told. Being willing to work hard and get dirty is important, but if you're sitting around waiting for somebody else to tell you what to do, then that's all you will ever do; you have to get up and make executive decisions and take the initiative in everything that you do. +Xinok Subscriber² Posted August 21, 2013 Subscriber² Share Posted August 21, 2013 Other than being born into favorable circumstances, I don't think luck plays much into it. That includes with "meeting the right people." Most of us will meet hundreds, if not thousands, of people during our lifetimes, with many of them being the "right people." The trick is establishing connections with those who will benefit your career, something that is a skill or talent in itself, not simply a matter of luck. Unfortunately for myself, it's a skill that I lack.
