Ambroos
I worked for an ISP for a month as a summer job, as a PHP developer. The department I was in (CERT) dealt mostly with security matters and my work wasn't directly related to that either, so my ISP-relevant experience is quite limited. But it was nice! I think it mostly depends on what kind of ISP it is though. The one I was at is one of the bigger ones here in Belgium, but only offers service to education and research institutions. They had a relatively small team for a pretty big network. Consumer-oriented ISP's will need much larger teams with more customer service and stuff like that. Because of the education and research-link, the place I worked at was very open to new things too. People get to try out new stuff, they were quick to adopt new standards and update their systems. The whole atmosphere just had a feeling of freedom and possibilities. I can imagine that when you're dealing with customers on a consumer network you are much more limited. xreyuk
I work for an ISP which has just been recently bought by one of the largest mobile providers in the world, and they've now turned themselves into a fixed line provider as well as mobile. I'm a field engineer, and it can range from fixing an ADSL line, to replacing a router, to installing high speed DWDM systems, to faults on radios! If you want to ask any questions I'd be happy to answer them :)
