'The Lone Ranger' to Cost Disney $160-$190M in Q4

Recommended Posts

Disney will take a write-down of $160 to $190 million in the next fiscal quarter, the company said during its earnings call on Tuesday.

"The Lone Ranger" has grossed just $175.5 million at the global box office, a pittance for a movie that cost more than $200 million to produce ? and millions more to market. Though it opened in theaters in the third quarter, its main hit to the company's bottom line will not be reported until the next quarter given recent changes in reporting standards.

The marketing costs of that film still submarined profits at the company's film studio, which reporeted a 36 percent decline in profits for the third quarter on Tuesday.

Yeah but you have to consider DISNEY is not only receiving income from the movie, there's also merchandise rights, toys, etc. so while it probably isn't a gold mine for them it didn't burn a hole in their pocket in the grand scheme of things.

Is there really a big demand for Long Ranger toys though? Maybe I'm wrong but I don't think anyone is rushing out to by merchandise for that movie.

It's not a matter whether they are selling by the bucketloat or not, I was just naming other factors that need consideration. Go ahead, walk into any toy store, kids clothes and tell me you don't see any lone ranger merch ( official or unofficial). edit: burger king/wendy/mcdonalds promotional cups/toys...  I could go on...

The only reason I knew of this movie was because of the Subway promotion and if Subway can get the rights to it, you know it's doing **** poor.

You do Realise Subway is the largest "Fast Food" chain in the world right?

Yes but if you've noticed, Subway has rarely ever done advertising involving licensing. Their two most famous campaigns involve a simple jingle and using a formerly obese spokesperson. I'm assuming that Disney practically threw the rights at them.

It may be felt its a loss leader to a second or third film, so even if it only breaks even this time the next film may get a head start off of it.

I don't think Disney understood that hardly anybody that's 30 or younger even knows who the Lone Ranger is.

Thats why i think the japanese were wiser, they keep re-iterating new Kamen series, Sentai series & Ultraman series.

You really don't need to know about the TV show, to follow the movie. ;)

Superman was created in the 1930's, as well as The Lone Ranger.

True, but there have been constant Superman movies, cartoons and comics since then up to this very day, while the Lone Ranger TV series ended in 1957.

Also, it's Superman. A cowboy riding around wearing a mask just doesn't quite compare. :p

Funny earlier today I read an article about the oversaturation of animated family films feeding into the impending Hollywood Flopalypse. There's a crapton of them coming on the horizon.
