Android is crushing iOS everywhere

If you are getting a modern smartphone, and don't install apps, you're missing out on some very good functionality. You might as well get a dumbphone and save yourself the cost of the data plan. It's like buying a Mac or Windows computer and relying on the software it comes with. Most people are going to want to install apps, and customize the device to their desires.

I can only assume such a mantra, still, stems from your need to add an app to do anything of merit out of the box.  That an 'app-less' phone is virtually a dumbphone is strange concept coming from WP.

out of the 48 people I work with in Tucson 39 have Iphones. The rest Android.

Tucson is a student city.. so it's not really objective of the real state of things.. most young folks rock iPhones still thinking it's cool.

This is a guy who clearly has never been to America.

Hahaha, this is where i learned about these absurdities! My girlfriend is American, lots of my friends are American, and I have visited many times. Im serious, in so many ways the US feels like it is decades behind the rest of the developed world. No one uses cheques on a regular basis anywhere else in the world, its called online banking and here in Aus we have been doing it as a norm since the early 2000's.

I'm getting so sick of people telling me "get your iPhone out".... it's not an iPhone.... "yes it is" *rips out hair* it's like telling someone get your iPad out when they mean tablet.......

I'm tired of everyone asking me if I have an iPad or a Kindle; I have a Nook.

The only people I see using checks are older people.  Hell, I still use checks for a couple things and prefer mailing payments at times.  I don't like automatic withdraws from my accounts.

Done a straw poll in the local pub the other day and most people in there have ditched their iPhone's for either Samsung's range of Androids or Lumias.

It also takes over your phone and SMS and generally doesn't work very well.

I used to use Visual VM on my phone, but dont anymore . I just dont find a use for it for what I do.  However, I never had it take over my phone and it always worked for me.

Are either of those builtin? Nope.

Most people won't know how to do this or can't use it. That is the problem.

Umm, who cares?  There are a lot of apps on different platforms that are not built in.  Like Facebook, Twitter, Skype, Instagram, and several others that are popular.  You put all these built in apps in to an OS and it will bloat it, lots of time you cannot remove the built in apps, or it takes longer to release OS updates.  The point of a smartphone is to add an app that you want when you want it.  And if you dont want to use it anymore, get rid of it.  Been a well received and normal thing on PCs for years.  The problem with people not know how to do something is not new to smartphones.

Have you had previous iPhones? Have you had previous Androids? The keyboard is a lot to do with what you're used to. If you're used to typing on a small iPhone screen, it'll throw you off for a while using a bigger Android screen. I assure you you can type very fast on Android when you get used to it. Have you tried Swiftkey as a keyboard replacement? I don't consider any other replacement keyboard to be anywhere near as good as Swiftkey, but then I haven't used them all. Second to Swiftkey I don't have much trouble with the stock Android keyboard. The HTC keyboard is garbage though, I can't type on that one either.

I have had previous Android, prior my HTC One I had an HTC Evo 4G, and after that I got a Nexus 7.  Typing is always a miss for me on Android Devices.  I even had a Motorolla Razr Maxx HD for a while and same problem.  I picked up an iPhone 5 recently for my work phone and it has been very smooth experience for me.  I enjoy typing on that a lot more than on my Android devices.

If you don't understand or can't accept the design of Android, then don't use it, but your argument is invalid due to your inability to understand the design. Android is built to be an open platform that promotes third party applications. If an application or feature isn't considered a core feature, it can be left out and you can download whatever app you'd like to extend that functionality. Using video calls as an example, they could integrate video calling by simply considering Hangouts a required preinstalled app. However, I may prefer to do video calls on Skype or any of the many other video chat services, but in reality, I don't make video calls, ever, so I just don't need the functionality on my phone.

An appless phone isn't virtually a dumb phone, it's a feature phone.

Weird. I will give Apple that they do something in their keyboard that makes it easy to type on. Even on the smaller screen it feels pretty accurate to me. Sometimes one thing works better for one person than another though. They all work very well for me personally.

Unlike one phone you have with iPhone, you have multiple factors, designs and sizes with Android.. so yeah, some people love big screens, some people like small screens, some people like cheap phones, some people like aluminum body slick designed phones, some people like completely customizable phones and appearanace (upcoming moto-x).. that's the beauty and quality of Android ecosystem.. there's something for every taste.

with iPhone you have one stale, ###### phone that hasn't changed in 5+ years that you've been rebuying over and over again.. not sure how anyone can claim that Android is the one that sucks.

Because most people don't care about what the phone looks like.  The software is what matters, and it's generally what makes the iPhone better than most Android phones.  No bloat, no lag, no malware.

My phone still looks in pretty good condition after almost two years of use and still serves my needs to this day. Since as Astra mentioned above, what I depend on are apps I use on a daily basis.

Not bad for a "stale ###### phone." If your justification of using your phone on a daily basis is to silently or loudly brag to others how much better it is than everyone else's, away from the cesspool of opinions flying on the interwebs, may I suggest you think of something more productive to put your mind towards.

But that's not really true at all.. iPhone gets bloat, apps crash (the amount or crashes I had on iPhones is ridiculous), it lags quite often unless you are using the latest iOS and the latest phone and malware happens both in the app store and on phones since a lot of people jailbreak their phones because they feel locked in.. Apple's whole developer PORTAL was hacked for christ sake.

iPhone at this point sucks.. I screwed up my Galaxy Nexus and I went back to iPhone for 2 weeks.. OMG, i wanted to kill myself.. finally got the super slick and awesome HTC One and everything is good in the world.

Most people who actually used Android and the freedom it comes with it, almost certainly will not go back to iPhone.. that's why iPhone's market share is dropping..

That's not what happened with VZW started selling the iPhone. A lot of people switched over from Android and haven't looked back, I see it all the time... before using one, they'll moan about how limited an iPhone is, then after using it their complaining starts to fade away.

If we're still going on personal anecdotes, a good friend of mine is a sales rep at one of our Big Three and specializes in phone sales. The amount of handsets he had his hands on is maddening. Early HTC handsets, Galaxy S2/III/IV, lots of Blackberries but not ones on BB10, every iPhone since 3G, a Moto Atrix, etc. Most recent device was an Xperia Z (lovely thing btw).

... his daily driver is still the iPhone.

What bloat?  iOS is the most slimline phone OS that's available.  Even vanilla Android comes with more junk than iOS does.

And app crashes are mainly the fault of the app developers.  Or maybe something was wrong with your phone.  Personally I've never had a single lag or crash on mine with the exception of Safari crashing once.  A few of my friends had Android phones and bailed to WP due to the instability and crashing.  I had a GS3 for a while and while it was better than all the other Android phones I toyed with, it still crashed and lagged on occasion.  Rather sad for a phone with such beastly specs.  Regardless of any of that, it's an accepted fact that most Android phones come with bloat that in turn causes lag.  Even the GS4 still slightly suffers from it.  This problem is remedied if you install a custom ROM, but it's rather pathetic that you have to do that.

And the reason Android is gaining marketshare is because they litter the market with phones.  How many Android phones come out every year? And compared to Apple's 1.  Proof of that?  Look who holds the phone sales records...  Clearly Apple isn't losing customers when they put up those huge sales numbers year after year.  They're only losing potential customers outside of US borders because of their unsubsidized prices.  But obviously they are looking to fix that with the plastic thing they're going to put out.

How do vanilla Android phones come with more "junk" than iOS? Keep in mind there are Nexus devices, and Google Play editions...These can be ordered straight from Google, so no carrier bloat...I do agree, it's crazy how these phones come with bloat. Thankfully Android lets you disable apps.

My iPod Touch 5g lags a lot (especially during device unlock), and overall I find it a lot slower than my HTC One to do most any task. From my experiences, Windows Phone is the best in terms of most fluid UI, but every phone on the market lags in some way, shape or form.

It's like the PC vs. Mac debate. Look how many Windows computers are on the market, vs. how many Mac's are out there. Both models have pros/cons. Personally, I like the freedom to choose my type of device rather than a company dictating what it should be. There are many Android phones that run smoothly, ex: HTC One. Do you want phones with removable batteries? Check. Do you want phones with expandable storage? Check. There is so much choice when choosing an Android/WP phone (more so Android). But, like I said there are pros/cons to both models.

If you are an average consumer, the iPhone is a great out of the box solution. If you are any sort of power user, Android is vastly superior in what it can offer. This argument will keep going on and on. There is no right answer. Use what you like and stick with it. There is no need to convince other people which platform is best. This is not directed at you Astra, just in general ;)

I guess "junk" wasn't exactly the best word, but what I meant was that a fresh install of iOS only comes with a handful of pre-installed apps.  And a fresh install of vanilla Android comes with considerably more apps pre-installed.  Boz said iOS is bloated, and my argument was that he couldn't be any further from the truth. Not that it matters though since both iOS and Android run silky smooth in the vanilla form.

I would say it is pretty even when it comes to what something looks like and the software itself.  I dont know how many people I asked the question "Why do you have an iPhone" and the response was "Because it is cool or looks cool"

you don't use swype to type?   it's amazing how easy it is to just run your finger around the screen to type instead of tapping each letter!  (seems like it would be even better on the iphone's tiny screen)

People switch from different platforms all the time.  I hear the same comments about people switching from iPhone...because iPhone is limited.  This is nothing new.

Of course Android has a larger userbase, Android is available on low-end devices. That is a huge market, and one Apple has no interest in competing in.
