Star Trek Into Darkness named 'worst Star Trek film'

Recommended Posts

The only thing I really don't like about the new Trek is that goddam awful engine room of their's. JJ Abrams is a twonk.  A fricking brewery? Really? That's the best you can do? Moron.

I've loved all the movies and that list is stupid. They include "Galaxy Quest" on it, lol! What you say here does bother me a bit too. The engine room seems way too expansive and complex based on what we see in ToS and even Enterprise.

It's not the same universe.

No reset button? Wasn't enterprise the one with more time travel crap than all other scifi in history put together? I mean I thought it was among the better treks, at least after the first season, but damn, no reset button...

Yeah, they went off the rails with the Temporal cold war story arc, but the season 3 and season 4 (S4 being my favourite season) had a really good episodes.  Enterprise would have seriously taken off like DS9 _IF_ they got involved in the Romulan War which is a serious part of the Federations history.

UGH. I will never forgive UPN for cancelling it at that crucial point.

The engine room is bad enough, but the warp core they have in the new universe? Holy cow, talk about big. I don't understand why they couldn't have just used something similar to the warp core designs from previous Treks. I mean, was the universe changed that much that they started using giant beer breweries to power their vessels in the future?

I have not watched any of the TV series or previous films, so I cannot really relate to the ranking. However, I did appreciate the two films that JJ Abrams made. I can comprehend the reasons that would make Trekkies dislike the new films, and the way these constitute a blasphemy to fans, and old time followers of Star Trek. However, to the younger generations, and those did not watch any of the previous TV series or films, JJ Abrams' two films are really not bad at all.

Neither are necessarily better than the other, but they certainly are different. I suppose that this is another way to say out with the old, in with the new. Probably the same way the new Superman is darker.

There are multiple errors, especially in terms of plot holes, as well as awkward scenes and heavy reliance on action scenes and special effects. It's not the worst, though. At best, it's average.

Indeed. Nothing could ever beat that steaming pile of dingoes kidneys that is Star Trek V. :p

Plot holes? Awkward scenes? Action scenes? Have you seen TOS? Or were there not enough classy double-fisted punches delivered by Kirk in the new films?

I started watching Star Trek with the TNG.  I never got into the original series.  Thus, I never liked the original movies except for Star Trek VI Undiscovered Country.  I liked the TNG movies.  If I had to choose a least liked TNG Movie, it would've been Insurrection.  The reboots, ehh, definitely not favorites of mine.  I'm not a fan of pre-quel style movies.  Which for me, that what the reboots are, pre-quel style movies since they're based off the original Star Trek.    I have a harder time relating to these new movies because, I watched all the TNG, DS9, Voyager and the TNG Movies.  I'm used to a certain level and setup with Star Trek and going backwards just doesn't work for me.  Though if more movies are made by Abrams, I will go see them as they are Star Trek.

Laughable list. I've seen everything there is to see regarding Star Trek, and Into Darkness was definitely not the worst film. It wasn't the best either (that's still First Contact for me, followed closely by Wrath of Khan), but to say it was worse than The Final Frontier is ridiculous.

I'm not comparing it to TOS in terms of plot holes. Rather, I'm saying that there are lots of such in STID. Several examples are given here:

http://movieplotholes.com/star-trek-into-darkness.html

http://whatculture.com/film/star-trek-into-darkness-10-things-that-make-no-sense.php

http://io9.com/star-trek-into-dumbness-507058729

For awkward scenes, some that comes to mind include "Khaan!" and the lovers' spat.

For action scenes, I think there are too many, at least compared to older ST movies. I think the reason is because it's a tent pole movie, together with the rest of contemporary blockbusters, which means it has to rely on lots of special effects and action scenes to attract an international audience that consists of various cultural and language differences.

Finally, it might be better to compare this movie to, say, "Wrath of Khan" than to TOS.

Doesn't bode well for Star Wars, does it?

Actually, it does for me because I loved Star Trek Into Darkness. I haven't seen any of the other Star Trek films yet (I will be watching them now I've seen Star Trek Into Darkness and I loved the characters and themes), but I know I like Star Trek Into Darkness very much. Maybe I won't like the previous films as much if they're so different :p

To those missing the humor in the new ST films, remember that the first original Star Trek film took place after their five year mission, they already knew each other pretty well. The same can't be said for the new films, plus the whole timeline shift as well.

The one thing that I did like about the this movie is that end payed homage to the Wrath of Khan and Kirk sacrificed himself for the ship instead of Spock. That's the way it should be.

I watch movies to be entertained. Not sure what Star Trek is "supposed" to be but if I want actual exploration of the cosmos I'll watch a documentary about space (of which I am very fond).  The last two ST movies entertained the hell out of me. Mission accomplished.

(....) Seriously... Lexx...why did it exist...

off topic: couldn't say better, what a POS of a show, weird and non-sense...

on topic: the engine room is great, for the first time we (as the spectators) can see the complexity of an very advanced engine room; i must say i liked alot and i would be disappointed if it was more simple; i mean have you guys saw a tanker engine room? It's massive and complex, so a very advanced starship must had a advanced and equally complex engine room.

I finally got round to seeing this and enjoyed it, as i did the last one that was made.

I think people who look for plot holes and inconsistencies instead of just enjoying the story for what it is means you will very rarely enjoy a single movie. I vowed after watching Inception and analysing that to the point i believed their was a massive plot hole and destroying the whole movie for me that I would stop doing that and just enjoy it.

It's kinda like magic tricks, once you understand how they are done, it just takes away the enjoyment.

I can understand rating it against other ST movies, but you shouldn't really compare because they are generations apart with a different spin and view point.

You may have a point there. It's hard not to judge it on previous work, since I grew up on that stuff.

FWIW, avoiding plot holes, etc., are not very difficult as they only involve the writing stage. Also, part of enjoying movies is a well-written story, and that involves avoiding plot holes, etc.

Also, it might be the other way round: a very good magic trick will look flawless, which is very much like a movie with very few problems with the story. Not surprisingly, planning and practice go into performing such trick, which is similar to questioning and revising stories before the movie is shot.

Finally, it's likely that characteristics of very good and effective storytelling do not change across generations, no matter what additional features are added to film making.

I agree to an extent and whilst I didn't look at all the links partly because the first one i found kinda frustrating by what they class as plot holes, to take a few as an example;

No Security Measures at the tower - To me it seems like a massive assumption that there was no security. Given that Khan was some sort of military genius he could have by passed security systems somehow. Also given that this is the future with things flying around all the time - maybe its the norm to have things flying so close to that tower and lastly unless I misunderstood, the star fleet were a generally peaceful group as they talk about that with their ships - in hindsight its easy to see a problem but in reality when this sort of thing doesn't happen then maybe they were just caught off guard.

Everything I have said can be argued for and against - its not a plot hole in my opinion, its being picky for no good reason.

Major plot hole around Kirk dying - what the author of this wants to do is wake one of the other super humans from stasis and potentially risk that person waking the rest and completely taking over?

I could go on and on about some of the examples on that website but in reality I don't think what that says are true plot holes.
