Last Straw with Gmail

Recommended Posts

I'd definitely call webmail like Gmail and Outlook.com FAR more convenient. I can't imagine going back after using webmail for so long.

Convenient if I'm somehow away from my phone, tablets or computers and maybe stuck at a library or something sure, but otherwise, I find the flexibility of a proper client far more useful, never mind a lot more convenient as I can get everything all at once without having to constantly hop around different web pages, throw on various utilities/addons, customization, etc... no comparison.  I can't imagine being stuck with what somebody says you should use and in such a limited way. But hey, that's your choice of course.

I guess maybe email is a lot bigger deal to you than it is to me. I don't even send many emails, 90% of the time I'm just reading them. "Constantly hopping around different web pages" is no different than a form refreshing in a mail client, and hardly slower. When I send an email it's just text most of the time so any text box will work just fine. I personally can't think of anything a client would offer me in customization that I'd care about over what Gmail offers, and on top of that there ARE countless addons, utilities, and customizations for Gmail as well if you so choose. I used a customization extension for a little while before it just got in the way. On the flip side, I've grown quite fond of the Gmail organizational system of just archiving and having Google's search to find emails. Try searching through a FRACTION of the emails I have in Gmail in a real client and it will take forever.

I can absolutely understand the argument for a real mail client at work. Unfortunately I got that and it's Lotus Notes, aka, the worst piece of software ever written by man. At work I may need a little more strict organization or rules or filters, not that I don't think I couldn't build all the filters and rules I have in Notes in a Gmail account in half the time.

I guess it all just depends on how much time you spend with your email and what you use it for. It also helps that I use all Android stuff so Gmail is integrated nicely.

That's the thing, it's just mail, where most clients give you a lot more. (Calendar, schedule/tasks, feeds, Tweets, etc, plus other sources via a few addons, and depending on the client office integration, etc) In a mail client I get that all on the same screen at the same time, zero jumping around, no tabs, no popups, nada. Not only that I can monitor for certain "triggers" and have then execute certain tasks, such as forwarded to other devices. For example, if my SQL server sends me a "help me" message, it's not only shown on my mail client's screen, but also sends push notifications to my phone, tablet and primary desktop. There's also all sorts of excellent integration with various office programs, etc that GMail can't do, copy/pasting gets old rather quickly. I'm also not a fan of "we think these ads may be relevant." I'm not bashing webmail clients, I'm a fan of picking what works for me, not what random forum people say I should use, if webmail suits your needs then great. For my uses it's horribly lacking.

Between several mail accounts with entries dating back years in the archive, a couple dozen feeds with hundreds of entries each, plus other data sources (overall pulling a number out of thin air, thousands of entries), it's more or less instant, that's the whole point of the indexing system. I don't even have to load up a web page or client to do that, I can get it right from my start menu or even the file manager if I wanted.. very flexible and infinitely more convenient.

Ouch, my condolences there, 100% agree. Had the misfortune of having to support that a decade or so ago, I guess it hasn't improved with age.

It seems crazy to me that you would use webmail over a native client. Webmail is great for public computers, but really none of them hold a candle to an integrated e-mail application.

I couldn't imagine not using webmail now to be honest. I use Outlook at work for my corporate email, and that's fine.. but for my personal stuff, where I don't need a "rich" experience (in terms of doing complicated tasks) webmail is all I need. And then I just check in on my email my mobile phone too. Been using GMail now for... must be about 6 years... I have absolutely zero interest in changing.

I use Gmail all the time and I'm very happy with it. Can't imagine changing. I did try the new style briefly, but I didn't like it so I went back to the old style and I intend to stay there. Of course, I use my phone most of the time to check my mail.

Well, out of all of those things listed, I use calendar and Google does that fine, and I use IFTTT and Pushover for notifications and they can certainly be set up with your email as well just like you said, but I know what you mean. I'd personally uninstall a mail client if it had any kind of twitter in it.

It's funny because it's basically the same debate as always with cloud vs local, except I'm usually against cloud type services while everyone else loves them. A little opposite here I guess!

But yeah, unfortunately Notes is our product so we have to use it. It's probably gotten worse since you last saw it, haha.

Ever since I started using a smartphone (mid 2008), I've using webmail less and less. That said, gmail never had a good interface but now it's getting worse IMO.

Yeah I haven't had a single issue with it.  I'm pretty sure I know what the problem is but I don't want to get another warning.

Personally i hate all webmail services and use them only when i'm on a public omputer. I use a desktop client and get my hotmail and gmail mails thru it. The only thing i really know about the 2 services is gmail spam filter is better at catching spam correctly. I use both my hotmail and gmail addresses as trash inbox when i register to forum and such.

I rarely send out emails, I guess I use it just to receive confirmation emails to forums. I have noticed that my Gmail account has been getting spammed ALOT, and what ****es me off the most is when I unsubscribe to an email listing, it doesn't work.

But then again, I use my iPhone or iPad to check my email majority of the time.

i havent had many issues w/ the new gmail layout. i reverted back to the 'classic' mode to avoid those ugly tabs.

Also, just change your Newegg email address to something else. i use another junk email address for things like this.
