Berg Blames A Lack Of Star Power For The Failure Of 'Battleship'

"I felt I had a new understanding of what went into making a blockbuster," Peter Berg said of his approach to box office flop Battleship. After the success of Hancock (which starred Will Smith and earned upwards of $600 million at the box office), you can't blame the director for being confident, but Battleship would go on to earn only $300 million on a $200 million budget. "I got a taste of a film?s global power. But I discounted the effect of Will Smith on ?Hancock?s? success. I thought I could pull off ?Battleship? without a big star." That point is of course debatable - look at the recent commercial failure of After Earth - but Berg blames the lack of a big star on the fact that there simply wasn't enough money left for one due to nearly half of the budget being spent on special effects. So, what's next for the director? Well, he's giving big budget blockbusters a break to focus on movies like Lone Survivor; a story about a team of Navy SEALs. "I don?t want to tackle that kind of economic project for quite a while," he added.

Seemed to work for Twilight :p

Well, I almost agree with you :D except, the Twilight books are decent books (not great books by any means) and a lot of the fans of that movie series actually are fans of the books. It doesn't hurt to have nice looking stars, though.

They somehow conned Liam Neeson into the film and didn't use him so why are they complaining about star power? Maybe because it was TERRIBLE in every conceivable way. Story, FX, everything was awful.

agreed one of the most terrible films ive seen in a long while, none of it made any sense, ive seen plenty of films which were great where all the actors were unknown, even mindless action films have some kind of coherent story behind them!

Seriously....all they had to do was have someone say: "You sunk my battleship" and the movie would have been a smash hit.  Who cares if it had d-list actors in it.  That line alone would have killed it.

I actually enjoyed the movie.  It was a movie for pure entertainment.  Simple plot...easy to follow story line.  Just need to accept the movie for as it is and dont expect every movie to be a great hit.  There were tons of movies considered to be crap at the time, and now they have a cult following.

It's mainly the director bitching about it, I think. I guess he wanted to make a lot of sequels. Anyway, I liked it well enough for what is was.

I thought it was kinda fun. Sometimes, all you want to do is to watch a mindless action flick, and it fit the bill for that perfectly.  I could switch off my brain and just munch popcorn without worrying about following a story.

Terrible story, terrible marketing, terrible CGI and you think 'Star power' was the issue? rofl.

I forgot to mention Rihanna **shudder**

Absolutely. Not every film has to be a Oscar nominator in depth three hour psychological thriller, and in that way there was nothing wrong with Battleship. Shame the director doesn't seem to notice this.
