Universal "Disappointed" With 'Kick Ass 2' $13.6 Milli

Thanks to the overwhelmingly positive reviews for The Butler, Kick-Ass 2 failed to come even close to giving Lee Daniels' movie any serious competition. However, more surprising than the fact analysts were way off with their predictions that the Jeff Wadlow helmed superhero sequel would earn at least as much as its predecessor is just how poorly it has performed in North America so far. With an opening weekend of $13.5 million, Kick-Ass 2 finished behind We're the Millers and currently looks set to have tied for third place with Elysium. We'll know tomorrow which movie actually came out on top. With a budget of only $28 million, the big screen adaptation of Mark Millar and John Romita Jr.'s comic book still has time to turn things around. It's kicked off its international run with $6.3 million and will open in more territories next weekend. However, Universal are clearly shocked at its domestic performance. "We were disappointed we didn't match the opening of the first movie," said Nikki Rocco, Universal's president of distribution. "The good thing is that it represented very minimal risk for the studio, and the first film did very well in ancillary markets, so we'll see where this goes domestically and internationally."

that must make the sequel truly terrible, plan 9 terrible.

.... in your opinion. I thought Kick Ass was pretty decent.

I'll reserve judgement for the sequel until I've seen it, but I'm looking forward to it. I rarely go to opening weekend showings though (last time was probably for the first Abrams Star Trek). It's usually too crowded and noisy, and generally just a poor experience instead of just waiting a few weeks and going when it's a bit quieter.

I don't really know what they were expecting. The first one only became popular because it turned into a cult classic. I work at a movie theater, and I was there when the original came out. It did all right in its opening weekend, but it was in closet theaters by the third week. After that, we just got rid of it because it wasn't selling anymore. Even if it gained a cult following later on, it's not going to turn into an awesome franchise out of nowhere. They've been advertising it like nobody's business, but there's only so much that can do. The lukewarm reception and mediocre B+ CinemaScore just don't bode well for its future. I expect it'll at least make back its production and marketing budgets, but it's hardly going to bring in anything other than that.

The first one was great. The sequel was okay, but it lacked the funness of the original. Even so, still enjoyable.

I felt like the first one kept things in the realm of reality more so than the sequel. They completely threw real world heroes out the door in the sequel.

Two best characters: Hit-Girl (duh!) and Mother Russia.

23 million it was made for, Mark Millar has already said its made about 13 million so far and expects more in the coming weeks as it opens in the asian markets (like Australia and NZ).
As soon as it hits 23 mil it would of broken even and anything more would be a profit for the movie.

Expect this to go nuts when the BluRay/DVD comes out, just like it did for the original, where it ended up making excess of 100 million :)

Typical studios.   "But but it hasn't made us ENOUGH profit yet!!!"

It didn't make a profit though. It cost $28 million to make and only made $13.3 million at the box office. That's a loss. Plus, that's just production budget, not marketing the film.
