The Dark Side of 'The Price Is Right'

Recommended Posts

I am not sure why you keep bringing up places outside the US when it has nothing to do with anywhere but the US. It has always been like this. If you earn anything, whether it is money or something worth money, it is income. All income is taxed in the US. It is great that other places don't tax all forms of income, but in the US, we tax every form of income, including inheritance and gifts. This is the US we are talking about so stay on subject. There are plenty of other threads for senseless US bashing but this isn't one of them.

I mentioned outside the USA because there are a lot of people from outside the US here, and that's why they're going to have a hard time accepting how this is handled in the US, especially considering how all the other countries don't class object prizes as income, only cash prizes.

I said it because it was the way you said "Why shouldn't people pay taxes on income" as though every country does it like the USA. If you'd said "We class all prizes as income here" I wouldn't have said a thing.

you mean, I can have this $18,000 car, only by paying taxes on its value. what an outrage.

My sentiments exactly. The way I figure, if I didn't want the car, I could just get a quick loan if needed to pay off the taxes, then sell that car, make a profit, pay back the loan which should look good on my credit history, and tuck the money away into savings. Of course, I don't work with that sort of cash too often personally, so maybe there's some sort of drawback I'm not catching...

There is no draw back. People are just complaining because they didn't get enough free stuff.

Where people are from has exactly 0 to do with the topic. Stay on topic. This story is in the US which means US law applies. This is about something in the US where all prizes are income so saying it is dumb to tax income is sheer ignorance.

Yes it was rude of him to call US laws dumb as though they're wrong, but your retort made it sound like only the US has it "right" and elsewhere is wrong, so I pointed out that each place does it differently, not necessarily right or wrong. And I feel discussing taxing prizes falls into the topic of the thread, so I am discussing it. This is a discussion, you don't just tell people how and what to talk about. You don't set the rules on what qualifies as on topic.

Wonder why we're singling out the Price is Right, when all the other game show/talk show prizes are also subjected to taxation. What's the big deal? When people make lottery winnings, those are taxed too.

You're still (generally) going to end up better off winning and paying taxes, than not winning!

You are right I don't. Good thing this topic is about a game show in the US and the laws that surround receiving prizes, in the US. The topic is very obvious. The laws of other countries is irrelevant because they have absolutely nothing to do with this topic. So either get back on topic or flame bait somewhere else.  I don't have to set the rules on what qualifies as on topic because common sense does that for us. The topic is about the US and the laws there regarding the matter there, not other countries. So seriously, get back on topic and stop encouraging people to flame bait.

Will you relax, I'm not flame baiting, how am I even remotely flame baiting? I'm having a discussion. And the topic at hand here is the taxation of prizes, yes the story took part in the USA. It took 1 person to call a law in America dumb and now you're attacking people left, right and centre. If it makes you feel better, people are discussing the law in America here, which matches up to your imposed topic guidelines.

I didn't say you were flame baiting. I said you were encouraging it. Someone made that comment that US laws are dumb compared to the rest of the world which is flame baiting and off topic. You are defending that which means you think it is okay to flame bait and derail a topic. This thread is about US law, not the laws of other countries which means the laws of other countries is not in any way shape or form on topic and is either an attempt to derail the topic or simply trash talk another country which is what usually happens on these forums these days. Stop defending it. Fact, this topic has nothing to do with the rest of the world so laws and practices from the rest of the world are off topic.

Also, "relax" makes no sense. Do you have a screen reader that is yelling at you? You are imposing your own idea of what is going on instead of just reading and taking it at face value. Nobody is yelling or upset. Turn you volume down maybe?

My, my, tobacco, do you always get this upset when someone supposedly appears to "US bash"?

Again, do you people use screen readers that yell at you? Who is upset? I didn't cap or use exclamation points so I am not sure why your screen readers are yelling at you.

I'm not defending anybody, I just pointed out the the laws in the 2 places are different. If you notice I haven't said a thing about the US laws on taxing prizes. I pointed out the reasons for the laws being different. If I was defending anybody in the topic I would have spoken about why the laws on one side should change, yet I haven't. And yes, discussing the laws of taxing prizes, even in other countries is on topic of discussing laws regarding taxing prizes. And now you're saying I'm derailing the thread and trash talking America, and yet I'm the one apparently imposing my own idea of what's going on?

Even if I had spoken against the law, disagreeing with a law does not equate trash talking an entire Country, I happen to love America, I holiday there regularly, I make tonnes of friends over there who I regularly talk to and socialise, I even wish to move there one day. So even if I had spoken out against that law (which I haven't) it isn't trash talking an entire country. I'm sure I could find many laws I disagree with in every country in the World. Doesn't mean I hate every country.

I'd go as far to say you're the one derailing the thread, plenty of stories are written on Neowin, its not forbidden to compare the subject at hand with your own Country. It happens most threads and most people will happily discuss it back and forth. Its still on topic.

Not sure why this is news. I learned this at a pretty young age. Should be common knowledge by now.

I always figured I'd sell anything I won and profit unless its a decent trip, in which case I'd gladly eat the tax money.

This is exactly why I don't watch garbage like this. Of course on a TV they will make everything look good, but behind a scenes things are pathetic almost all the time. I absolutely cant stand watching this show or any shows like this.
