I am to get either an Xbox or PS2 for christmas. Now please, I do not want to start a flame war, but cannot decide (and I have spent almost a month trying). Let me outline what I want:

Media Playback (MP3, DIVx, DVD)

Online play (not a huge thing, but wanna try)

Connect via my wireless network

Play backups

Play imports

Play emulators (specifically PS1, Sega Genesis and Snes)

Games I l am keen on:

Vice City

Streets of LA

Tony Hawk

Dance games (if xbox can emulate PS1 then that counts)

FPS games

WWE Games

Please, I am looking for the ability to make an informed decision, and if people fall back to the old "mine is better than yours" things, then I cannot take it at all seriously.

Also, are there any version considerations? Bios etc? What modchip do I want?

Thank you all

it looks like both consoles can do those things... so if you have money, get both. If not, get PS2. Plus, PS2 has more desire games THAN Xbox (excluding Halo). :) (cuz i dont have xbox so I dunno no.) PS2 rulz all the way!!

my friend ONLY bough Xbox cuz of Halo and NOTHING else. His xbox has been sitting collecting dusts and huge box too.

The xbox is exactly what your looking for, its a media center

the xbox totally owns the ps2 now, the mod scene is amazing... you'd be dumb to get a ps2 if you want the things above...

basically it looks like windows media center, and you can play all your games/emus/pc ports on the hard drive (cds/dvds are for suckers)

this topic appears every week, xbox seems to be the console of choice now... has all the games, better graphics and a great homebrew/mod scene

yes the xbox can play ps1 games and also stepmania has been ported

Lightfast, you really are a god amongst men. I never thought to check if stepmania had been ported over.

Thanks. You have just made my decision. That is unless someone comes and says something earth shattering about ps2

So can anyone recommend a good modchip to allow me to use some of the features, and places that can install it.

I am in Bedford and Leicester UK, and money isn't a major concern, I am willing to pay for good service.

Also any info on fitting an HD, tutorials etc would be appreciated.

XBOX Disadvantages:

* I find the general selection of XBOX games a little bland / generic, where as the PS2 seems to have some great quality games available (that problem does seem to be fixing itself now, there are a lot of quality titles on the way, and just released)

* PS2 has more games

XBOX has these advantages over the PS2:

* PS2 has been out longer, and with a new PS on the way your console will be superceded quicker then the XBOX.

* Better graphics (More texture memory, Full scene anti-aliasing, bump mapping, etc, etc)

* PAL XBOX games run EXACTLY like NSTC (even when running in starndard 50Hz)

* You dont have to buy a memory card to save your games (because of Hard Drive)

* Online Play (see below)

As far as online play goes, XBOX Live! is far superior to PS2 Network Gaming. On XBOX you have a universal friends list, so you can see what your friends are playing (and join them) from any XBOX game, you cant do that on PS2 (because of a non-standardised network). XBOX also has a hard drive so you can download game updates and addons via the internet. Plus XBOX has ethernet built in.

Overall I think that XBOX is better, but its all up to you in the end.

Thank you for a very informed post. I agree that the PS2 has more games, but it seems to be that the XBOX is catching up, and the whole idea of "exclusive" titles is phasing out.

As for LIVE, MS have invsted heavily in this, and I would gladly pay for a decently run service rather than the PS2 system.

Yeah, it is up to me in the end, but I want to make an informed decision, so thanks again.

I never tell people what to get because if they dont like what they buy, i dont like having that on my conscience.

There are a lot more things that I thought of after I posted that (typed it up in a hurry).

For what you need I definatley agree with KrypToniK, XBOX sounds like your machine, due to the wealth of emulators, ability to RIP cd's and play them during games, etc.

Keep us updated on what you end up gettting!

you also mentioned that you wanted to

Connect via my wireless network
..i know that the xbox has a Wireless Adapter (802.11g) ... although the price is a tad bit steep @ 200$ CAN

I currently am runnin a P2P (ad-hoc) wireless network at home over 3 wireless usb devices. However, I am not adverse to upgrading ;)

I have told my girlfriend to order me the new XBOX bundle with Halo and Gotham, so the die is cast. Now, modchips...

Anyone know of anyone in the Leciestershire/Bedfordshire area who can install such a feature?

And tell me, I am looking to mod my xbox for media use mostly, NOT for "backups". Does this count as warez? If so, I am sorry.

xbox all the way , there is so much you can do for the xbox and so many great things about it , your allowed to talk about making your xbox into a media center but cant talk about back ups , i would also get a bigger hdd while getting the mod :)

Oh sure to the bigger HD. I have a few spare 200Gb drives in a box somewhere. Is there a consideration as to what drive to use?

And as for backups - I'm not really interested. I'd like to know it works, but to be honest I like to own games in boxes - stupid waste of money but hey.
